Lately my computer has been using 100% of the CPU for no apparent reason. So it messes up music making it skip and stuff, and games run slow, etc.

I've noticed that before it starts to use 100% of the CPU, some command prompt window opens up real quick and then closes down before I can see what it is. After that, it's 100% usage.

This is really starting to **** me off and I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who knows what is going on, and if there is some solution to it? I am planning on a format in like a week but this is getting really really annoying at the moment.

I don't know of a virus that does that, but I don't know of many viruses.

You should definately run an antivirus program to check.
AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php) is a free one you should try if you don't already have one.

Go into task manager and find what process is using all the CPU time. Try killing it, and investigate what it was. It could be something legitimate that just went awry.

It's adding up to like 100% from services.exe and svchost.exe under the SYSTEM username...

I have no idea what's wrong and it keeps doing this.

I ran that housecall virus scan (from www.trendmicro.com) thing and deleted something it found but it didn't solve the problem, I'm still getting 100% CPU usage. :\

Sounds like one of your services is hanging. Go into Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services

Then begin stopping services one at a time, and see which one causes the system to jump back to idle. You should not disable some services... if you don't know which ones are mandatory, have a read through here (http://blkviper.com) in the xp services guides
