I am having a wierd situation here. (I have 3 computers to test with)

I recently purchased a Gforce 2 Ultra for my Pentium 3 850

My other machines are P3 1Ghz with a regular Gforce 2 GTS and a P3 700mhz (100fsb) with another Gforce 2 GTS.

In comparison I have swapped parts....

Orginal Config: 850 w/ GF2 Ultra; 1Ghz w/GF 2 GTS
Swapped Config: 850 w/GF2 GTS; 1Ghz w/GF 2 Ultra

I had swapped video cards around and back and even used the most up to date drivers from NVidia on them. And it still seems that

My Pentium 3 1Ghz(133Fsb) is slower than my P3 850(100fsb) processor no matter what! ??

The motherboard for the 1ghz CPU is an Abit BE-6 II 2.0 Raid w/512 MB RAM
The motherboard for the 850 Mhz CPU is an Abit BE-6 v 1.2
with the HighPoint 370 controller. w/384 MB RAM
The third computer the 700mhz @1ghz is the same as above with HPT 370 controller w/384 MB ram.

I am using a slot 1 configuration for the 850

and a flip chip adapter for the other with the 1ghz P3 CPU. My 700mhz (100fsb) cpu which also has a flip chip adapter in my 3rd machine still out performs the stock P3 CPU when overclocked to 1ghz which yet has the same Mother board and memory and video card, a Gforce 2 GTS.

My agp settings under the bios are for the 1ghz cpu are set to 2/3 and that is the lowest it can go. No further bios updates bring it lower even if I decide to over clock. For my 850 I have that clocked sometimes to 966 or 1ghz no problem with the agp set at 2/3 and my pci at 1/4 much like the 1ghz machine.

I even played around with my CAS settings, changing them from 3,3,3 to 2, 2, 2 or 3,2,2 and still no change.

When I play half-life, quake3 or descent 3, my pentium 3 1ghz machine is still slower in frame rates etc. I have tried numerous video card tweaks etc and registry tweaking like cool bits, messing with my Open GL settings too. All 3 of the machines video cards are made by Elsa. I tried changing refresh rates to see if that could possibly maniuplate the speed in gamming and even console scripts in halflife where you can change the texture detail etc.

If anyone knows or that can correct if I am wrong somewhere. Please tell me. I am willing to learn.

Is there a good reason for all of this or simple human error?

Thank you all for your inputs.

Jeremiah

Are the chipsets the same on the two MB's? I think i would benchmark my CPU's with Sisandra, I would have to think it would be the MB's before i would blame the CPU, you would be the first post who has noted this problem, maybe you have a bum 1g but i dought it. Do you have mad onions 2001 benchmark scores?

With my benchmarks...

The 700mhz did over take my Pentium III 1ghz in Si Sandra 2001 and in 3D Mark 2000 and 2001. Even when I switched them to different boards, the same with my 850 when overclocked to 952 mhz. Parts swapping, prove to me all my parts were good, MB's were good**, CPU the 1ghz did not take to well on either machine, slowed up in the graphics dept. It moves fast like normally..but slows up in the graphics dept even with my GF2 Ultra. One last thing I did was since I had a lot of memory was to open my AGP apeture size from 128mb to 256mb in the BIOS, that helped a little bit with the 1ghz CPU since I have either 512mb or 384mb of ram.

I might have a bummed CPU or motherboard, I think my Raid Board has been having problems with other things lately..besides graphics and processing dept. So my gut tells me it is my mother board and may have done something to my CPU? Who knows? I will check it out further. I may just switch it out to a regular Socket 370 MB instead of a Slot 1.

Yes this has been a truely wierd problem..

I appreciate all your help sir.

I guess one system is not the other. I was amazed when I checked my Celeron800 (at default) system with my Inlaws 800EB system. It's a MSI (OEM) Via mobo with 128Megs and a TNT2 M64 card.

P3-800EB:
Sandra:
CPU: 2087-1039
Multimedia: 4187-5128
Memory: 302-351
Drive C: 16125
3DMark200: 1758

Celeron800 (default and TNT2 at default speed):
Sandra:
CPU: 2121
Multimedia: 4353-5331
Memory: 306-347
Drive C: 18960
3DMark2000: 2772

I'm NOT bulsh*itting here! So, ????

jeremiah the bullfrog,

It could be the video driver (and Registry) problem. Since you have switched the video cards between two different systems, this kind of problem is actually common. I heard problems like this quite often. I don't know if you have properly and fully un-installed the previous video drivers by following the procedures noted in the Nvidia driver ReadMe text file? I am not saying that even if you did this correctly, it will solve your problem, but something to look for..

This is one of the clearest ways to do this..

- Uninstall the Video driver in the "Add/Remove Program" and in the "Device Manager"

- Go to the Display Properties, click "settings" tab
- Click "advanced" button
- Click "Adapter" tab
- Click "Change"
- Click "next>"
- Click on the "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want"
- Click on the "Show All hardware"
- Select "(standard display types)" Select "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter(VGA)"
- Click "next>" then "ok"
- Click "apply" so it will ask you to restart. Let it restart, then you should get a standard PCI VGA desktop screen with standard colors. The Turn off the computer and you can swap the video card.

Now, install the new video driver for your video card.

There are more than one ways to do this. Or you can just follow the instruction from the Nvidia driver instruction.

If you already know this or have done this, please disregard my reply. :p :o

They were my video card drivers on the RAID system, I had two sets of drivers installed. I went to www.tweak3d.net for this information to remove previous drivers. And not only that but opening up the apeture size from 128MB ram to 256MB Ram since I have 512MB Ram.

Thank you so much everyone and keep overclockin'.

Jeremiah.
