gmail is the email service from google, it is currently in beta testing

Search, don't sort.
Use Google search to find the exact message you want, no matter when it was sent or received.

Don't throw anything away.
1000 megabytes of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message.

Keep it all in context.
Each message is grouped with all its replies and displayed as a conversation.

No pop-up ads. No banners.
You see only relevant text ads and links to related web pages of interest.

Ive heard that current beta testers can invite new users.

Any info from current members would be appreciated. ;)

Wow...sorry, I dont have any info, I just heard of it just now, why would they just give away a gig of space? There has to be a catch somewhere.

The catch is hardly anyone will ever use close to a gig, so they can oversell it.

And they'll make a killing with advertising.

Of course people in our great capitalist system have to cash in on this.

Actually, there is sorta a catch. By agreeing to their user agreement, Gmail will scan your incomming and outgoing mail for keywords. This information will be used to send you advertisment while using Gmail.

Or you could run your own mail server and not have to worry about space.

I disagree.

A gigabyte of disk space is cheap. I already have spare parts laying around to make another computer, but coincidentally my mail server is on a box that'd be up anyway doing the other things it does.

I practically have unlimited space for my email. Never have to delete mail. And its set up the way I like it. I use imap instead of pop3, have webmail access. Server-side filtering, and server-side spam filtering if I want it. Its ALOT handier than an isps mail account, and its free at my own domain and I can make all the aliases or extra accounts that I feel like.

I'll probably get at least one when its open to the public to use as secure data storage.

i have an acct right now. needless to say, i love the interface, but since there's no pop3 retrieval right now, it's kind of useless to me. i need it to be able to glean my email from my own domain address.

PM or whatever works.
