ok, I'm currently running Win Millenium. Nice stable (as long as I don't do anything funky, like OC...). I was just wondering what is, in your opinion, and I stress OPINION, is the best Win OS for OC'ing? I'd use linux, but most of my apps aren't supported by it as of yet. As soon as they are, I'm switching in the blink of an eye.

Same here... goes crazy when you OC.

I am thinking about going Win98SE. I've heard its friendly with OCing.

but I will miss Me's features such as control panel access, and I'll have to do so many updates on 98. (which I don't like to do) But I'll have easy time installing @Home, and my favourite firewall is win98 compatable, unlike win Me.

Oh well, anything for these extra MHz! :)

My favorite is Win2k because its nice and stable. But I'm also slowly losing interest in overclocking. My 1333 Tbird is plenty fast at stock. And its more stable that way. ;)

if u think winME is stable
install win2k and see what your missing
i cant get past 102fsb on win98
but can get to 112 with win2k
(dont seem like much, though its at a 9.0 multiplier)
and youll find most ocers here using this os
or maybe win98 lite
:)

I would have installed Win2k a long time ago, but the problem is gaming.

Heheheh, that's why I took it off. "What?!?!! No CS!!! Screw this!"
But, I'm building a second system, and shortly there after a third (watercooled rig). So, I was just wondering what's the most stable Win to use for my OC'ing rig.

I'd say Win98se Win me made me mad because of the dos thing (but someone here gave me a work around). But I think ME locks up a lot more, like it can't handle the work load that 98 can.

2000. And what games do you play that won't run on 2k? And CS runs perfect on 2k by the way.

I currently use windows 98SE, and it's very good, no limitation ! (except for my hardware !). One thing, do NOT install windows XP. I don't know how it performs for overclocking, but the smart tags and the activation codes thing isn't neat for me !

My two $0.10$ !!!

Win 2k is my os of choice. Haven't run into to many apps/games that won't run lately. IMHO if it doesn't run under win2k I didn't need it anyway.

I know I cant be the only guy that NEVER locks up with WinMe,And I mean never.Look at my sig I am oced and stable as a rock my opinion of 98se or WinMe is that with WinMe I can oc higher without lockups. And have that system restore for the times when new software causes me chaos. Most reciently My printer software it self locks up but windows still works LOL, go figure, I can surf the web or game with the printer software locked tight as a drum {I played a game to see if I could with the printer softwere locked to prove a point to lexmark tech boys}Any ways I love WinMe and prefer it to 98se or 2000 The later which causes more bugs on my system thany and previous Windows product.

I guess we have unique systems and we will always have some who like and dislike any O/S,And we will all find one which works best for our hardware setup and user needs.

Couldn't even install it. Might be due to my version of half-life. It's the first version, without TFC, and all the other patches that were included in the second release.

ive never had gaming problems, and SP2 provides a big improvement in this area if you dont have it already.
its built in with directx7.0
and supports dx8
which equals good compatibility

Either Win2k or WinMe but my version of Me is tweaked and 80% of the OS is ripped out. Win2k for the average user.

My vote goes to Windows 2000 Pro....Multiple crashes and lock-ups with Me...Windows 98 Second Edition is good but for stability Window 2000....hands down in my opionion

In my experience ive used almost all the operating systems and 2000 pro and NT are the most stable ive used and the cpu runs cooler with them i prefer 2000 over NT. 2000 is the way to go the only thing is that it takes longer to boot and seems to run slower then any 9x platform. and as far as 98 or 98 se they can be very unstable Me is more stable then 98 by a good margin and that is what i use on my home system because it runs more optimum with 256 megs of RAM and boots quicker. 2000 runs smoother with more RAM while 9x is not as noticable. My choice for stabilty is 2000 pro all the way but if your a speed freak i would go with a 9x operating system if you wanna see performance if you could get it stable at the same clock speeds as 2000pro..

win 98 se and win 2k is good for me.........but with win2k lots of things don't run on it for some reason but it does provide an increase in performance...and counter-strike or rogue spear and lots of other games run on it....win98se is a lot better for gaming but it is slower than win2k and not as stable

WinME or WIn2k pro. Never had problems on this 2 OS. I've been using ME for a year or so and I can say that it is fairly good on handling games that I have. I was able to o/c too without any hassles ( this maybe dependent on your system, there are others that had no luck with ME ).... And I can the same for WIN2K... able to run Q3A, CS, D2, and Jane's USAF without a problem...
