View Full Version : Question about removing pads from my T-Bird...

Howdy all...well, my new 1200 Athlon arrived yesterday, and I'm all up and running with my Abit KT7E...I'm not O/C'ing yet, because I'm having a bit of a heat problem.
To cool it, I ordered a CPC 30370 with a 38 CFM Delta fan, like so:

along with some Arctic Silver II. Problem is, I don't think the springs that keep this HS attached to the ZIF socket are strong enough to press the HS down on the foam spacers. I'm having trouble getting good contact between the HS and the core, and I think it's the pads that are keeping it from happening. Has anyone considered removing or trimming the pads down to allow closer contact between the HS and the core?
Thanks in advance...and please ignore the sig, I have to update it soon.

If you're very careful, you could probably scrape the spacers off with a razor blade. The chip's surface tends to be pretty tough.

Your supposed to SCREW the SCREWS down until its got minimal slack. The CVChill comes really loose.

Yes, I know that. They're unscrewed to the point where the springs are at maximum height and the HS is pressing as hard as the springs will allow. It's still not enough, as I'm still getting temps in the mid-50's.
Anyone else tried to remove the pads?
Thanks!
If you remove those pads your HSF will be able to rock back and forth more. And you've got a much better chance at crushing or breaking the corners of the core.
Those pads compress fairly easy, I don't think they would be able to keep the HSF from getting good contact with the core. Unless the retension clips are no good.

I did take the pads off one of my birds just to find out what you are asking, and no it didn't make a difference in temps. I did however chip the corner a week later installing another HSF.

I would suggest not shaving too much off the pads if you decide to do that. Maybe you could find some longer screws. Is this hsf made for the new athlons? See if you can contact the company who makes that hsf and tell them what you told us.

Don't take the pads off. They compress way to easy for it to be a problem. If anything it is the clip of your heatsink. Try lapping it for better contact.
DON'T remove the pads. They compress when a HS or waterblock is mounted. The only time I have chipped a core is when using a Glaciator on a Bird prepped for pelts. The feet have to come of since a 1/16 sheet of neoprene is put in thier place. Of course I was in a hurry when I mounted the Glaciator an could not take time to super glue the feet back on the chip. Live and learn! As others have pointed out, without the feet to protect the core, it's way to easy to rock the HS and crunch your core.
