View Full Version : K6: Bus underclock, CPU overclock?

I upgraded old system from an overdrive-200 to a K6-3 a while ago. This system can't go above a 66MHz bus (cheap, junky SiS chipset - I don't dare raise that clock), but I found a cheap K6-3 350MHz to go inside...

This chip is rated for 350MHz on a 100MHz bus. I've been running at 366MHz on 66MHz bus for a few months, and with a new primary computer I think 400MHz sounds like more fun...

Any thoughts about the heat effects of running a CPU at a slower bus but a much higher multiplier (3.5x upped to 6.0x)? The MB has no heat measurement, so I can't get any temps - although I do have a decent Socket 7 fan. I ask this more as a theoretical question - I expect everything would work fine, but I can't find this chip anymore.

It's not really relevant what fsb and multis you're running at when it comes to the temps. K6s do run hot though, and if you want to know more about this subject i think i counted 3 other k6-2 overclocking questions very recently. Those could help you out.

What motherboard do you have? Is it a socket 7 or socket 5? I find the idea of a 66mhz bus limit oddly confusing.

Have you tried setting the multiplier to 2 which the CPU will recognize as 6.0 thus yeiding 400mhz(6x66)?

I'm not too sure as to how you're getting a speed of 366 unless that mobo supports a multiplier of 5.5 which would be wierd.

This all is really wierd as I've heard alot about the old K6 series lately. I just upgraded an old P166 system with a K6-2 500(83x6) this past week!

I'm using a rather old board ($35 from a friend) - I think a PCChips M571. It uses a SiS 5597 chipset (I think) - and has LOTS of useful jumpers on the motherboard (Vcore, bus speed, multiplier, etc.) I do have the manual, but it doesn't list a manufacturer...

The highest 3 allowed bus speeds are 66, 75, and 83. There are plenty of voltage selects (the board supports P75 through K6-3), handles SDRAM (I have a 64MB stick in now), has no AGP, and cheap integrated sound. I do have my own PCI vid card (had a serious driver problems with SiS). The system might handle a higher bus speed than 66MHz, but I don't want to kill any of the other pieces - and I don't want to sink more money into that old a computer.

I haven't decided whether I do want to overclock the CPU, I'm asking this as a theoretical question - if the bus won't go above 66MHz, and my CPU is rated for 100MHz bus, can I raise the multiplier farther than normal before I have heat problems?
