I am seeing alot of places saying "*Rare* Samsung memory with Radeon XT!" What is such the fuss with Samsung memory? Isn't infineon Memory just as good?If someone would be willing to fill in a Video card n00b in that would be great :)

When it comes to overclocking, virtually everyone has better results with Samsung or even Hynix rather than Infineon. As a result, Samsung memory is desirable over Infineon.

yeah, but here's how "rare" samsung memory is on a 9800pro

i walked into best buy, picked up a 9800pro (today!) and bought it ($220!).

it had samsung mem.

i'm willing to bet at least 90% of the ones on the shelf had samsung memory, if not all of them.

But on most XT's now they use Hynix or Infin on them. So that would make "sammy" ram rare on them. Most 9800np use infin now and also most 9800pro's. The older ones use sammy mem with the R350 core.

Was it a 128 or 256MB 9800 Pro? Is it ATi or Sapphire? I got a Sapphire 9800 Pro 128MB with Hynix and it doesn't o/c well at all, but this may have just been a freak occurance. Most people seem to be getting the best luck with Samsung RAM. As for the XT, yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the same Samsung RAM that's coming with all the rest. My friend just bought a few 9800XTs and it's all Hynix, so I think Dukemurmur is right about it seeming "rare" to them.

Also...was it the 3.3 or 2.86ns samsung...this makes a big difference in OCing also...

Thanks for the help guys, this information will help me on my future purchases :).

REply to MightyBuck: as Dukemurmur stated, I said XT. the newer versions seem to have INfineon ram on them.

Again thanks for all the help.

3.3ns = DDR300; 2.86ns = DDR350. All 9800 Pro 128MBs by specification have DDR350, so yes, you probably have 2.86ns.

Just checked your product number, yup, 2.86ns! :p
