Hallo! Right now, on my network, we have a LinkSys BEFVP41 Router that takes the incoming cable line from the cable modem, then distributes it among 4 wired CAT5 connections through our house. It is all set up as the main domain for the internet, you know, 192.168.1.1 as its gateway IP and so on... Ok, so besides that, I am getting a laptop soon and we already have another wireless laptop and so we need to hook up a wireless access point. We were given free a LinkSys BEFW11S4 wireless router to hook up in the network and run it.
We hooked the wireless router into the system after the wired router and the "internet" LED light turned on and all. And then we tried to connect to it using the one laptop we have with the wireless card in it. It could read the router, but it didn't get any internet and couldn't network or anything.
I was wondering if anyone can help me setup and/or configure these two LinkSys routers so that we can have both the wired router that we are running all around the house but also have a wireless router for using the wireless cards in the two laptops whenever we need.
It says for configuring you are supposed to access the router via 192.168.1.1 but that won't work because it already sense and will only find the first wired router when it tries to configure or when I try to look for the other. I don't know any other ways or how else to get this sytem connected and working! :( Can someone please help me out so we can get this running? :)

What you probably have to do is hook up a computer directly to the wireless router and access it via 192.168.1.1 but not have it part of your home network yet. What probably will then be able to do is disable the DHCP server of the wireless router. also while in the config page for the wireless you will have to assign a different static LAN IP for the wireless router like 192.168.1.100. you will be able to do this on the Setup tab page. reconnect the wirelless router to the uplink port of the wired router of your home network and see it that will do it.........

you cant have to routers on the same network becuase they both will do dhcp. what you need to do is have one router that will be the router to the internet. what i would do it config the wireless router as your main internet router and then sell your old router. if you need help let me know

I'd make the wireless router's IP like 192.168.2.1 or so, because stock the linksys routers start to gives the IPs to the machines at 192.168.1.100.

you don't want to make it a 2.1 unless you change the subnet to 255.255.0.0
If the wireless router has a 4 port switch built into the back like most linksys do, i would take out the wired one and drop in the wireless.
Like Fightingpiper was saying, you can turn off DHCP, change the address of the wireless and then just use it for the switch on the back, but honestly I think it would just be easier to move the wireless model in place of the old one, not to mention you could then sell the old one or pass it off to a relative that needs a router.
that is unless the wireless one has a slower switch in the back, or just doesn't have a switch at all. i'm not familiar with the model and was too lazy to look it up ;)
That is how I have mine set up. I set it up this way so I can take the wireless router away and my network is still up. First almost all the right info is in this thread already.
1. Connect by wire to the wireless router.
2. Disable DHCP in the wireless router
3. set the wireless router to have a different ip I think I used 192.168.1.2
4. Do all the normal setup for it like changing the admin pass and securing it.
5 hook a cat5 from a regular port on the wired router to one of the regular ports on the wireless router.
6. You should be good to go:D
That wireless router has a 4 port switch built in. You can replace your original with the new wireless. The set up is straight forward from there

that is by far the best bet!

But, that was not his question. He asked how to do it. It is not hard to do.

I finally got it working tonight. I went through and change the whole IP to 192.168.1.2 and disabled DHCP. Then I couldn't get internet to work on the wired machine connected to it, so I spent a long time figuring it out then finally asked a friend and he told me disable all the NAT settings too, which I did, and finally, plug in the CAT5 to the right port. That was my last mistake ;) But I got it down and now it is running and works great! Thanks for all your help everyone :)
