System: Gigabyte ViaApollopro 133A mobo
224 meg
Voodoo5 PCI
Celeron 800
I have overclocked my celeron to 896mhz by upping the FSB to 112, however when I try and go further to 124 FSB the PC boots up only to tell me that their is a problem with my registry and windows will shut down to fix it. This will then 'loop', i.e. boot up again with same message, until I change the FSB to 112 or less. I am running Windows98 SE. Is this a problem with windows or is the hardware saying no way? My Motherboard will definitely support at least 1ghz processors according to the manual. Please help! I am quite new to overclocking and am stumped but hopefully someone will know if this is a surmountable problem!

Hi stefmcd, wellcome to the Forum
try rising the Voltage of Cpu, but no more than 10-15%, and check your temps, never must go over 40-45 degree C.
I hope it helps you ;-)

Problem is my mobo's voltage seems fixed.

Also try to set your PCI divider at 1/4 instead of 1/3...

Hey, if you find the problem let me know. I'm having the same problem.

How would I alter the PCI divider? Bios or Hardware?

What do you think guys, can be do it a vid pinnig in this situation?

You are likely having voltage issues. Check Giga-Byte's website (http://www.giga-byte.com/products/pro_new3.htm) for which board you have and check the manual to see if it has voltage adjustments. Likely it does, but it may be on the board itself using jumpers.

I'm afraid my motherboard manual describes the voltage jumper as optional on the mobo and guess what? Mine is missing! Typical! Where the jumper should be is two cylindrical electrical looking things to use the technical jargon. Keep the ideas coming guys/gals! Definitely wish to be enlightened about the PCI mhz thingy although i notice in my mobo manual a piece of info on the spec page which says (PCI 44Mhz) (reserved) which maybe sounds to my novice brain as the limit for the PCI line but then that would just be a third of 133 wouldn't it? Could it be my PCI video card doesn't like the 41 mhz it is getting at an FSB of 124? Replies please!

Hi stefmcd,
I think that the best way for your chip is to go with 133Mhz of Fsb, surpassing all the probs connected to the Pci divider, but you cannot rise the voltage on Mobo, so the probs now is the stability, I suppose the only way you have is the Vid pinnig of your chip for an higher voltage :-)

Please explain this 'vid pinnig'.

Well, is the connection of some Pins of the Cpu to use a different voltage than the rated, when there's no way into Bios or on Mobo (Jumpers).
I'll give you some links and more info, I did it on my Celeron 2 600.
