View Full Version : transfering xp to new hd
help, i need to transfer my whole hd over to a newer one because this one is going bad..... but i cant get windows dir to copy over.... my floppy drive's bad so i cant use a floppy to boot into DOS, safe mode wont do it because there are still files in use, windows xp cd goes into a *limmited* DOS (keeps saying it doesn't copy dirs), i tried making a boot cd but it failed...

Why not just use the XP cd on the new HD?
it'd take alot of time to reinstall all the stuff i already have on there, something i dont have. i need to fix the puter, and make recover CDs, AND show my wife how to fix some things on the puter before i go overseas
My WD drives came with a really nice utility that copies one drive to another, including boot sector, system files, etc. It basically clones the drive. I don't know if that's a shareware program or not, I'd poke around on the hd manufacturers' websites and see if you can find one to download.
I take it you got the drive used or oem? Most of the commercial drives come with software like I described. My Maxtor had it too.
old drive = OEM, new drive = from new xbox
but i'll look on the old drive's web site
thanks,

Why not try using norton ghost it's really fast to clone entire harddisk.
