View Full Version : artic silver on ram OK?
Currenly I'm out of thermal tape to stick on my ramsinks, so I wonder if artic silver 3 is appropriate or not. So what you think?

I think there is a good chance that Arctic Silver 3 could ruin your memory (if it touches a single contact between the IC and PCB you can short an IC) and that it wouldn't be strong enough to properly secure a ramspreader at any rate.

There likely would be no problem... Arctic silver is not conductive, but slightly capacitive. This means that if conditions are just right, and two electrical traces are close enough and the power is great enough that there could be a possibility for a short.
More importantly however, AS comes as an adhesive and as a regular thermal paste. If you are going to use it on ram sinks you should get the adhesive.

u can also put a drop of it on the ramchips then use some superglue on the edges of the chips to secure the ramsinks, just make sure u dont get the superglue mixed up with the a.s. cause it wont hold properly

Someone on the forum did this and fried their RAM, please save yourself the trouble and wait for more tape or use ceramique versus getting frustrated and having to buy new ram. As long as too much is not applied though, you should be fine. Remember to use a mixture of AS and epoxy to get the sinks to stick though. (50/50 wasnt it?)

Yep, wait for the tape. A while back, I foolishly attempted to attach some RAMsinks to an old GF4 MX440 with AS3 and super glue. The AS3 got onto some of the chip legs and created horrible artifacts on the card. I cleaned it and cleaned it, and it finally got back to a point where it would work most of the time. To put it short, it's a pain. Just wait for the tape.
I just went to Fry's Electronic and they have 1 piece of 3/4" adhesive tape for 2.95$   I need at least 2 or 3 that size. I guess i may use ceramique unless adhesive tape deal pop up some where.
