Anyone else enjoy this lesser known very underrated RPG? There are a lot of things about it I like much better than Morrowind.. for example the npc's speak everything, they keep moving in conversations, with mouth movments and hand gestures, etc. They seem to have more AI. The flora/fauna is more realistic and I enjoy realism.. Morrowind seems like an alien planet. However, to be fair, I have not played a lot of Morrowind yet - I am going to get more into it. The music in Gothic II is better and excellent.. creates a very nice mood or atmosphere, its enjoyable just to walk around and feel like you are there.

played through gothic one all the way... loved the first four fifths of it... i think the series does a lot of things right that morrowind kinda messed up for me... i was semi-excited about the sequel (having trudged through the ending of the first), but for most of the first game I was sure I was going to buy the second...

so i haven't played the second... but it's sounding good right about now :)

but i can definitely give props to the series

I never played Gothic 1 - and from what I understand 2 is better in many ways. But I love 2 - even though IMO its far from a perfect game - if I had a mil $ I'd produce a GREAT game.. but its going in the right direction. Mood, atmosphere, realism, etc.

From what I've seen, compared to Morrowind, it seems to be Imore about qualilty over quantity (G2 vs MW). Both get great reviews. However G2 doesn't have the exposure - people don't seem to know about it. I only tried it because someone reccomended it in a converastion about RPG's.

That's because its another example of a great game that is popular in Europe, but not in N. America - much like 'The Longest Journey' - a fantastic game, but barely heard of in the US/Cda. I'm sure you can order it online, or get a computer store to order it in.

Another interresting observation about G2 vs Morrowind - MW is a much bigger land area tha G2, yet G2 is on 3 cd's compared to MW's 1 cd (for the game, not incl. the editor) - this is all the quality, every word spoken in the game is recorded voice, etc.

I loved Gothic 1 and Gothic 2.

It did get some publicity from the very popular PC Gamer magazine, as they gave it a great review and gave it RPG of the year award (was able to win it due to KotOR winning game of the year).

They only have a demo of the german version.
But HERE (http://www.fileshack.com/browse.x?cat=1025) it is.

ya it is a German original. In the English version, every so often there will be some German text that forgot to be translated to English.. very annoying, but doesnt happen often.

I've heard so many good things about G2. To be honest MW is good, but there's so many things that annoy me. Like the flat NPCs (they're all the same except for quest npcs), the astmosphere, and just the general game style.

I want to try it out, but at the same time I don't want to pay like 40 bucks to get it. I guess it's a good time to learn german, jawhol?

GII is more about quality over quantity.. I started playing MW and didn't like it too much.. all the landscape was repetitive, and too alien looking. The NPC's were all alien looking, I don't like how they freeze in conversation, and all the reading.

G2 on the other hand, each NPC has i't own voice, you don't have to read anything, all the text is spoken. They keep animated when talking, and when not engaged in conversation, the go about their daily activities.. working, sleeping at night..

This sums it up - MW is much larger in scale geographically and amount of npc's, but it is only 1 cd compared to G2's 3 cd's full.

Perhaps you could find a friend that has the game.. and go over to his/her house and play it.. or somthing like that.

I wish I could, Chriztapuppy, but I'm the only guy who likes RPG. All my friends are into BF:1942, CoD and Blackhawk down types of games. Heck, I just bought lineage 2 and Xenosaga last week. I just like a good story.

I have a suggestion for you if you like rpg's and storylines.. I have not tried this game yet, but I hear a lot of great things about it.. once again another European game thats popular there, but unheard of in N America (the Hasslehoff effect) - this game being "The Longest Journey".

Supposed to be amazing..

I shelled out the $50 for Gothic II after reading the review in PC Gamer mag but just havent had the time to play it yet. (Between having surgery on my shoulder and coaching baseball I just havent had the time). Anyways, one of these evenings I will have to try it out.

I agree, Gallapoo, I really liked Arx Fatalis as well.

From the same developer IIRC.

You'll definitely want to check out Gothic 2, Tuk, I can't remember if it started off slow, but just keep on playing no matter what, it's an awesome game.

What's IIRC if its form the same people that made Arx Fatalis, then it should be a winner right?

If I Recall Correctly

I think they're both published by JoWood.

I really disliked Arx Fatalis... I didn't go very far. JoWood did Europa 1400 though right, I played that for a while. Kinda interesting idea, I wish someone would take it and make it better.

Well it all depends on what type of gammer you are and what type of games you like, i enjoyed that you could interact with about just about everything in the games, and cook fish by setting them on fire pits, little stuff like that make games for me I guess.
