I just purchased an AMD XP2600+ processer and was sold a 266 fsb motherboard. I'm want to return it to get a 333 motherboard so that I can get the full use of the processor. The problem is that most motherboards say the xp2600+ will only work on the 266 fsb. Is this true or will my processor work on any Socket A motherboard with a 333 FSB? If it is true, what motherboard should I get to make this work?

You should list the mobo you're talking about here.

Are you sure you have a 2600+ Barton and not a 2600+ T-Bred, what are the codes on the CPU:
2600+: DKV3C [133] x 16 = 2133 MHz T-Bred B, Last letter of the code is B or
DKV3D [166] x 12.5 = 2083 MHz T-Bred B, Last letter of the code is B
except if the second letter of the code is Q -- then it's a DKV3D Thorton. or
DKV4D [166] x 11.5 = 1917 MHz Barton, Second letter of the code is Q

You should go to the manufacturer's web site to see if it can take the CPU you have with a BIOS update.

As for what the best overclocking mobos are, nForce2 chipset Abit, DFI, Soltek imho.

I'm actually not really trying to oc at this time.

The code on the chip is:

AXDA2600KV4D T839796B40994 AQZFA040SVPMW

The motherboard I have is a Syntax SV266AD. Doesn't look like a BIOS update will do it.

Will Any Socket A mobo with 333 fsb work to get my processor up to it's intended speed of 1917 mhz. The Syntax mobo only gave me 1.5 ghz. I have noticed in some of the descriptions that it shows that 2600 only at 266 mhz, or is that just for the old processor and not the Barton?

You have a Barton which is designed to run at default 166FSB and a KT266A mobo that is only rated to 133FSB I am guessing it is running at 1.15GHz not 1.5GHz as that would be 11.5 multi x 100 FSB which is what it would default to. That mobo is the type TigerDirect would bundle with a duron. You can try and adjust the FSB in the BIOS starting at 133 to see if it runs that (its should) then go straight to 166FSB to see if it will run. Whether it runs is entirely dependent on whether your mobo has 1/5 dividers on it so that the PCI's and AGP run at the correct frequency at 166FSB (but I dont think these mobos had that). I think you will need a new mobo.
Edit here is the Syntax website and it shows Bartons are not supported so would assume no 1/5 divider - therefore dont try it at 166FSB as it might corrupt your hard drive - get yourself an Abit NF2 board.

There were 3 different Athlon XP 2600+'s.

There is a Barton 333, a Thoroughbred 333, and a Thoroughbred 266.

If you have a 333 (I think the D at the end of "AXDA2600KV4D" means it's a 333, C I think is 266, and B I think is 200), then you should have no problem running at full speed in any motherboard that supports a 333 FSB.

Incidentally, the 266 Thoroughbreds are the most expensive, as lots of people want them to upgrade 266 FSB motherboards. The 2600+ was the fastest 266 FSB chip that AMD made.

...if you don't count the very rare 2800+ Thoroughbred B.
