View Full Version : Recommend Me A New CD-RW Burner :)
It has to come in black to go with my new case, preferably 52-32-52 and be at least a 2 Sheep Burner(3 would be great :D). Plus has to be a reasonable price. Any good recommendations? I was thinking maybe a LiteOn? Thanks in advance.

2 Sheep? Sorry if I'm out of the loop, but what does that mean?
What kind of case do you have and is a simple stealth mod possibly an option? I bought a used beige plextor and stealthed it with a black case faceplate - looks just like the empty drive bays.
Just an idea... Sometimes you can pick up good beige drives for a bit cheaper, and stealthing looks pretty cool.

I would recommend teh Liteon. I've got one and it works great.
Thanks, i think i will go with a LiteOn. Anyone recommend a particular model?
Basically "Sheep" is just a way of measuring how good a particular burner writes regular bit patterns.
3= Awesome(But rare...)
2 = Drive writes regular bit patterns correctly.
1 = Drive writes regular bit patterns almost correctly.
0 = Drive does not write regular bit patterns correctly
You can download a programme to test how many sheep your particular burner is:

I collect games in a big way(i have nearly every major system since the Nes, and some from before) and like to make legal backups of some of my rarities/investments so i want a burner thats up to the task.
One of the shortfalls of the Chieftec BX-01 is the drives slot into place and so you cant really add a face plate, well you can but it wont be flush :( Plus rather than buying a beige burner and a black face plate i may as well just buy a black burner. I have a buyer for my old burner so i can use that cash to upgrade.

In that case, I would highly recommend a plextor burner for such a use.
Lite-ons are good burners, but their longevity is not far better than other CDRW's IMO. I have heard of a lot of people using their plextor drives for 5 years or more, thats why I was more than willing to buy a 40x32x40 for ~$25.
Thanks. Yeah i may look out for a good Plextor. The only problem with Plextors is they only tend to score 1 sheep burners, apart from the more expensive Plextor Premium. LiteOns seem to score 2 sheep(or higher). So its a case of reliability or performance.
If i can find a good 2 sheep Plextor for my price range i think i'll go for that, otherwise i think it will be the LiteOn.

LOL@sheep. Thats the first Ive heard of that too... I put a $32 lite-on in the last system I built. It worked fine, but as Ive said before, was a bit noisey for my tastes.
