Alright, in the coming month or so I will receive a Prescott 2.80A/533 from work for about $80. Thus, I'll be building a system with it and tinkering with it just for fun.

Now, I've looked on the past threads on the board here, and nobody seems to ask the question that I want answered.

In general, most folks are simply recommending "500-550W" power supplies for suitably OCable Prescott systems. However, looking through the specs on several power supplies, how they come to their rating differs quite substantially. Some are rated heavilly on their 12v, 5v, and some very high on the 3.3v rails. For a P4 system, which rail is most critical to delivering current to the CPU, memory, and other critical system components? Is there any particular amperage rating I'm looking for here?

I also have a 5900 flashed to a 5950 Ultra, so information on what will feed that well, too, would be appreciated. Right now, my 300W Fortron is okay with that card and my Barton Athlon, although no real extreme OCing is being done with it. I just assume that this PSU, no matter how much I like it, will probably not be as reliable as it should with the power draw of a Prescott system.

Thanks for any help!

Have you read larva's sticky? Has lots of good info in there.

The CPU draws off of the 12v, which is why you have a 4-pin P4 plug for the mobo. I can't say for sure about the other components (memory, etc.).

I had scanned it recently, and read the whole thing a few months ago. But there's no specifics on minimum recommended ratings for the Prescott in particular. Which is ultimately, I guess, what I'm looking for.

I also learned that both the AGP and CPU (as you mentioned) are powered from the 12v line, so I've got more inclination to go with an 18+A 12v line rating...

If you read through the posts here, you'll hear these get recommended over and over again:

PC Power and Cooling Turbo Cool 510
Antec TrueControl 550
Fortron 550
