Hey folks, quick question:

If you install an 80 - 120mm fan on an acrylic window, would there be noticable vibration? Would using rubber gromets help at all?

My idea was to use a top case window and a 120mm blowhole. Running faster I wonder if I'd cause additional vibration noise.

Would depend on how its mounted (both fan and window), the thickness, and how hard it is.

here's the solution according to me (i've done pretty much exactly this)

1. mount the window with automotive tape. the stuff is sticky as hell so don't mess up. and if you want to change out the window, it's gonna be a pain. BUT the tape will keep vibrations from transferring to the case because it is sort of foam-cushion-like.

2. don't use metal screws/bolts to mount the fan. get these rubbery mounting "screws". i say screws, but they are really just like a rod of rubber that you pull through the hole to secure the fan. i have no idea where to find them, but i'm sure they exist (because antec ships them with some cases). if you can't find that, try to use anything but metal, because metal and plastic make noise together in this situation.

3. try out those shims that you place between the fan and case. they are made of silicon and should also help reduce noise.

4. if possible, don't use a fan grill. i know the skulls and crossbones are awesome and all (ugg..) but air makes a lot of noise when it has to rush over/through them.

5. play around with where you put those rubber grommets. i recommend anywhere where they can stop the fan from coming in contact with the metal screw/bolt or nuts you use.

good luck, give us feedback and pics

Thanks for the replies!

I will deffinately keep the ideas in mind when modding.

Now, to find another disposable camera :)

*edit*

Hrm, I'm having a tough time finding a top case window. I need the dimensions to be 10" x 5" or so. I've ordered handles for my antec case and they require ~3" on both sides of the top panel.

Best I can find is almost 12". Hrm, may need to cut it a bit.

Anyone know where they'd sell 8" x 6" acrylic windows?

You could probably find a glass shop that will cut pieces of acrylic for you. I don't know how much they will charge though. You could also look at a home depot and see waht they charge.

You may also want to consider buying the acrylic stuff locally if you're gonna be doing a couple small windows or something. Then you don't have to hunt for them on the internet and you could save yourself some time possibly. More time for modding ^_^
