View Full Version : 9800pro from Ti4200
Hi i have a 64mb Ti4200 and am looking to upgrade. I see that the 9800pro is the best buy lately. is it much better than the 9700pro?
Also will the 9800pro work okay as i have an nforce motherboard.
And lastly are there any known problems with game sand the 9800pro. i mostly play mohaa, farcry and bf vietnam.
thanks
oh and i hear the sapphire version is the best?
There's a good deal out now for the x800 Pro. If you want your video card to last a bit longer, then it's the choice for you.
I doubt the 9800 Pro will be able to hold up playing games much longer at high resolutions with detail setttings maxed. Hell, with Far Cry it can't.

the ati 9800pro is an awsome card
i have a ti4200 and got the chance to use a 9800 pro in my comp for a little while. i'd say go for it. you won't be dissapointed. the 9800 pro is an excellent card.
that "good deal" on the x800 is still $150 more then a 9800 pro.

Its a massive upgrade IMO, jsut moved! 13k 01 => 16k 01... didnt seem like much, but this card gives DOUBLE the fps in most games WITH 6*aa and 16* af enabled. Loving it atm!

Going from the 4400ti (128MB) to the Hercules 9800 Pro was the single biggest improvement I've seen in performance easily.
There is NO comparison.
I also recommend the Hercules card because it overclocks extremely well and if you decide to watercool you already have ram sinks etc. Plus w/ the blue led fan it just looks cool. ;)
Here are a couple of comparison pictures if you like...you can see the nVidia is much longer and really works to cut the lower half of my cases air circulation off. :(

when I had the oppertunity to run a radeon 9800 at almost XT speeds, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be, maybe I was asking too much, but I feel my Ti4600 still has some life left in it, either that or I just don't have the money to upgrade at the moment, and due to my finantial situation (student) I want a card that will last me a long time, so its going to have to be a PCI-E card, maybe later this year if I get some money together over the summer.
Back to what I was saying, I was probably expecting too much, went from 16k to 19k in 3dmark 01, and from 2000 to 5500 in 03, but it still doesn't play farcry as smoothly as I would like, all these people who say it plays "as smooth as silk" on max settings are lieing as far as I can tell, its smoother than my 4600, by about 20fps (almost twice as fast approx) but still not smooth, and when I play games, I don't like a single bit of slow down, farcry is pretty much the only game I have played that can do that to my 4600 so I haven't had the need to upgrade yet, I have a feeling HL2 and D3 will be to much for my 4600 and I'll upgrade then.

well i have a 9700PRO and i play farcry @ 1600 x 1200 and most details set to normal and 2 or 3 items set to max and i play it fine @ 30-40FPS...........
9800PRO will be able to play game for @ least another year or more = pending on the eye candy and detail you want.
Thanks guys

Running 4.2 cats here which seem to be the best... Newer ones have a few small fixes, but nothing massive....
IIRC 3.8's are the best speed wise though, so might be worth a try...

never get drivers off windows update. NEVER. unless you like malfunctioning hardware.

I like the Omega drivers specifically the 2.4.96c (Cat 3.9). You might give them a try.

The 9800 Pro is roughly 5%-10% better than a 9700pro. Would I recommend someone upgrading from a 9700pro to a 9800pro, NO!

Saphires are decent and they share the same 102xx part number Built by ATI cards have, in fact many of the Built by ATI cards are in fact made by Saphire. Since you play BF Vietnam there was a problem with ATI cards and that game, but it was recently fixed and all is well.
I'd say get the 9800pro, going from the ti4200 will have you smiling from ear to ear when gaming ;)
i went from a ti4600 with 2.8ns memory to a 9800xt, gaming? wasnt a huge diff, my ti4600 didnt really struggle often. only game that did was bfv. got the 9800xt. looks 'basicaly' the same. doubling my ram to 1024 gave me a huge increase in gaming performance tho. however the 9800xt benchies on 3dmark03 are amazing, compared to my ti4600 that nearly died on it, my 9800xt flys
