PC too weak for folding?

OK, I've got here an OLD, but FREE :D 120 Mhz PII system. I would like to add it to the list of PC's I have running F@H, but would it even be worth it? All it would do is run F@H 24/7, and sit there. Can this system even handle F@H?

120 mhz is a p1, i doubt it will do much, but you can get it doing some timless tinkers...

I'd say its not worth the electricity but then I must remember how old comps tend to use barely any powah at all. It wont do much but I suppose it will help just a tad. One WU a month maybe lol.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since they're called "timeless" tinkers, I figured they wouldn't have a time limit, and even if it takes 2 weeks to churn out 1 WU, that's 1 WU more towards my score :D

You need a 200 MHz CPU to reliably meet FAH deadlines, some deadlines may be met by a 166 MHz CPU but not many.

For timeless tinkers: using notepad, add the following to your client.cfg file: [clienttype]
type=2

There are also timeless gromacs that come out too. Just set up the computer like you would be doing Genome@Home though the F@H client. There is an option in the standard install or just change the client type in the config file like Mr.Radar said but it should be CLIENT TYPE 2, NOT 1 to have it setup as the former Genome@Home which is now Timeless tinkers and Gromacs. According to stanford there are going to be a lot more timeless WU's as they are seeing some benefits from them.

If I recall correctly, the pentium 2 is a socket 7. That means you can spend about $15 on newegg and throw a 500 mhz K6-2 in it, which would make it a decent folding rig. My K6-2 550 has no trouble meeting deadlines.

I'm not completely sure your motherboard can support that chip, but I think it would be worth looking into.

I bet some people around here have some old k6-2/3 chips they'd donate to the cause.

P1s use Socket 4 I think, possibly socket 7 for the later ones. It depends on the board as well though.
Pentium 2s used Slot cartridges, Slot 1.

I would say that if you can afford the power for it, stick it in a closet and run timeless tinkers on it. Worst it can do is one WU every month or something.

I'd do nothing with it and in 10 months you will have saved $100 worth of extra electricity... spend the $100 on a PIII machine from your local newpaper classifieds. You'd loose out on maybe 10 WUs while waiting, but a P-III with SSE enabled you might do 3 WUs a month...

Just a thought.

I have a PII 333 and it can take weeks to complete one tinker...yours is not worth it.....sorry
