I have the first release of IE 6 and it doesn't have the ""smart tags" as has been discussed here in this forum.

I'd like to d/l the newest release of IE 6 but I am hesitant. Has anyone downloaded the latest release and if so... do you recommend it?

I'm using the latest public preview of IE 6....it doesn't seem to be too bad so far. This release has smart tag support but I haven't downloaded or installed any smart tag packages because I really have no interest in doing so.

But I don't see how smart tags will be a huge controversial problem for web authors who are against them because by adding a simple meta tag to their web page, smart tag recognition is disabled. Was there something more to this that I'm missing?

Hey, PCGirl, did you have the first beta release of 6 and if so... what's the diff with the newer version(that you've noticed)?

I don't know what version of IE 6 I downloaded (first or latest, or any other ), but after I rebooted, the system was slowed down, a lot slower, like if it was a 200 MHz system, while it was a 900MHz !

Sorry, can't really help you on Smart Tags, all I have heard is that they are sort of links to web pages someone (Microsoft ?) chose. (donno if that's true) Donno how, donno where, donno when !

Do you know of MS's Passport system?

That forms the basis of Smart Tag technology. Basically, once you've logged on to passport, then you don't need to sign on to other sites that use the technology. (Very basic description....)

Yes, there is a meta tag that can be added to the page to disable smart tags...you have to use it on each and every page AFAIK, and I have had reports that the meta tag does not work.

I have heard from several webmasters that are waiting for the final shipped version....believe me, if MS keeps Smart Tags, it will get very ugly for them.

Smart tags are basically links to every word on a webpage I think. It's like if I wrote 'I like AMD' you could click on amd and it would direct you to an amd related site. The problem is MS controls what the smart tags point to and they would own the liscense on words. It means a lot of unnecessary control for them, and people could buy the rights to be linked to words. That's how I understand it. A nice idea though.
