I just completed the vgpu and vmem voltmods to my 9800 pro. GPU went smooth, soldering the connections was easy, increase from 1.69v to 1.73v immediately after the mod.

The mem didn't turn out though. I had a hard time soldering to the hot point, but I eventually got it. After properly setting the pot according to the guide I used, I powered up the system and checked the voltage.

4.3v

Yikes! I saw that and IMMEDIATELY shut it down. It was only running that for about 5 seconds while I got a reading. My ramsinks were very, very warm. It wasn't hot enough to burn me or anything, but it was MUCH warmer than I've ever felt them at. Needless to say, that scared me.

I turned it back down almost to default voltage (2.7v default, got it to 2.88v) - and now when I boot the system, I get a display, but its just blocky garbage.

Since I was able to adjust the voltage with the pot, that leads me to believe the soldering job was ok. Anyways, my question - would that high a voltage be enough to kill the memory on my card, even though it was only running it a couple seconds?

I'm going to try removing the mem voltmod and see if I can salvage this card.

I have booted cards with big overvolts like that due to a bad PS, but it never damaged the card in my case. It is possible, no getting around that. But It might just be a stray bit of solder, or maybe re-check your mod again. Sounds like you had the vr maxed for juice. Do you know how to read the VM?

Well, hope it's not dead:cool:

The guide I was using said to set the resistance on the vr to 10K ohms. It was a standard radioshack trimmer style vr - middle leg is live, 2 outer legs ground. So thats how I measured them. I set both vr's to 10K at the same time - the gpu one was fine, the mem overvolted. I removed both mods, and reseated the heatsink and its still blocky. I'm going to look for any stray solder, but it was a pretty clean job. My worst fear is that the overvoltage was enough to basically fry the inside of the memory chips.

I say its fried. Did the same thing to a 9800 and everything was fine in windows, but it crapped itself on any 3d game and got tons of artifacting... volt modding is dangerous.

oh, man, thats bad news man, it's like a doctor telling you the bad news, but it's gota be said, I think it's dead man...

What kind of ram does that card have, i've been tempting murder with my card, and i've wandered into the 4+ volt camp b4 but so far i hevent killed my 9700, specificly, the highest i've even ran was 4.25 volts W/out any ramsinks:eek: I'me very very curious if i aughta tred no futhure. maybe 4.3 was the glass ceiling, anyways, sorry man

It had the Samsung 2.8ns ram, the same 8E-GC stuff that could be bios-modded for an extra 15-25 mhz. I just found that out after removing my sinks. Yeah its a dead card, I've already gotten another one to replace it. A sad loss, but its part of the risk I took.
