View Full Version : Advice for burning in my CPU

I've just gotten a replacement processor from Intel for a 700 that went bad on me. Both proc's are the same stepping (cB0) but the old one did far better when it came to O/Cing. The old one did 933 at 1.75 volts, the new one will go that high, but only at 2.0 volts! And that setting resulted in a hard lockup when I used Explorer to browse a secondary HDD.

The old CPU had been in use at a normal clock setting for at least a year before I started experimenting with higher settings. My suspicion is that the old CPU had plenty of time to break itself in, thus the easier overclock.

Has anyone had any experience in burning in a CPU? I'm currently running at 903 with a voltage of 1.85. Still higher than the old one at 933! My goal is to get my system back to what you see in my signature. Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Well, some people do have luck burning in, so I would give it a try if I were you. I wouldn't give it 2.0V though, I would never go beyond 1.90... but that is just me playing it somewhat safe.

You could run the prime95 torture test, or why not run the folding@home client or seti@home client for a while, and help out overclockers.com teams while burning in?

I have seen that to be true in most cases. I overclocked my friend's P3 550 that had been running normally for almost two years and I had used a 1.70 voltage and got a 42% overclock... on the other hand when I first got my P3 866 I could I only get a 18% overclock w/ a 1.90 voltage then a month later I got it up to 22% on the same voltage...rock solid. Then I gotta p3 1ghz 2 weeks ago that is up to 19% on 1.90v. Granted all CPU's are different, but I think to some degree that is correct.

What are your temps at? Might need to reseat the HSF, just a random suggestion. But, something you might want to try.

Temps are at about 40C full load. Case temp is usually about 31C. Ambient is normally at 28C+. I've got a really hot room! I lapped the heatsing a few weeks ago (right before I toasted my old CPU) and that seems to have brought the temps down by a few degrees. Thanks for the replies so far!
