The Register--always biting the hand that feeds IT--is reporting that AMD's 90-nanometer Opteron will not be "shipped for revenue" until Q4 2004. This bit of Intelese used by an AMD exectuive suggests that, like the 90nm P4 Prescott, that AMD's 90nm process is delayed. However, it is to be rememberd that AMD has always maintained a broad second-half-04 release target for their 90nm platform...so...

Everything seems to be in proper fashion at AMD again...

yes, from the roadmaps i read, they appear to be on schedule. i've also heard that they are experiencing problems like Intel's electric heater, but to a much much lesser degree.

Quoted in the company's announcement of its Opteron 150, 250 and 850 processors today, AMD's Microprocessor Business Unit chief, Marty Seyer, says: "We have already begun initial production of 90nm AMD64 processors, and we are on target to begin shipping 90nm processors for revenue in the third quarter."

i dont know where you see Q4, says thrid quarter right there.

he meant that it would pretty much be a paper launch. they'll be making and selling 90 nm opterons, but there won't be many to go around. so, basically, it's being launched in q4.

The logic in that article is seriously flawed. They say that AMD is using Intel-like phrases to imply its 90 nanometre process will be delayed to Q4.
However it goes on further to say that Intel used this when the queried about the Prescott being delayed. However NO prescotts came out in the last quarter of '03 in any volumes!
I think the Register is being disingenuous especially as it was clearly stated that they were already in production and the timescale is the second half of '04.

why would he say that when AMD today said they would ship for revenue in the 3rd quarter?

he said they would not ship in significant volumes until Q4. that means that they will be for sale in the Q3, but there aren't that many of them, so its kind of a paper launch - it will be on the market, but pretty much no one can buy it because of availability. yes, it is technially for sale in Q3 (shipping for revenue), but won't be around until Q4. he meant that people like us couldn't buy it until Q4.

even though amd specifically says they will be shipped for revenue in the 3rd quarter?

there won't be that many available! that means meaning unless you're an OEM or head of the server division of sun microsystems you're going to have trouble and/or pay out the wazoo for these processors.

shipping for revenue means they will be readily available.

paying out the wazoo is a given, they are opterons not athlon64's.

apparently you didn't read the first line of the article.

An AMD executive has tacitly confirmed that AMD will not ship 90nm Opterons in significant volumes until the fourth quarter.

ok, this is pointless, cause even if one of us is wrong, we're still going to argue. no matter what "shipping for revenue" means to amd, there won' t be that many to go around and that's all that matters to us.

It is only the Register that is saying there wont be many to go around by extrapolating what AMD have said and applying Intel logic to it! Tacitly means they did not actually say it! Anyway suppose they are released on say September 25th then obviously there wont be many sold in Q3 ! It does not mean they are in short supply - this was the same when 64 bit was launched in late Q3 last year but there were no shortages.
