View Full Version : New to folding
hey guys i just started folding. :)
Don't mind running it in the background all day long as long as the computer is on. Only prob is that once school starts, i won't be able to leave it on all day:(
My folding name is also Coolio and i joined the overclockers team too. My comp is a P!!! 700 mhz. I am currently on my 4th frame:p

GREAT - Welcome to our team! :) We are glad to have you aboard.
What made you join us?
Feel free to ask any questions what-so-ever. We will be looking for you in the stats! Fold on!
I was just reading all the other sections in the forum and the topic of folding came up so i thought i'll give it a try since my comp stays on most the day.

Cool man!
Glad you teamed up with us! :) Have you seen our team page yet? If not, just follow the link in my signature. It has everything your heart desires! (Or at least is has some folding info!) lol
One question is did have was what exactly is folding. I mean i know that it helps students learn about proteins but how do our computers help them do that? Do we process data for them?

Not students - scientists! We help science!
And yes, we process some of their data. This data is very complex (The folding procedure), and has to be done many, many times. This is where we come in! ;)
yay another folder
we gonna whoop some DSL A**
Welcome Coolio. Glad to have you on the team. The speed of your computer may be less important than your ability to continue folding over an extended period of time - up to a point, of course. Every returned work unit helps. :)
Why do we fold??
There is an explanation at http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/Cosm/science.html and here at http://www.overclockers.com/folding/ explaining why we are folding, what folding is and why they need so much processing power to fold a protein.
