Hey everyone. I am currently running a great water setup that consists of this:
Maze2 block
300Gph pump with res
12'x7' radiator with 2 120mm fans
I have a 1ghz athlon running at 1.53ghz on a iwill kk266 board at 2.08v. Now i cant figure why my VIA temp monitor is giving me such high temps that get too 57c at load. I have made sure my block is properly seated and everything is setup perfectly. I have a fan that gave me better temps. I think that my temps are false for these reasons. I know that the temp probe reads of how much heat is around the cpu area and not the actual core so i am thinking that since there is no active fan cooling there its reading that heat and not so much my CPU. To test this i put a 80mm fan and my temps went to 35c. What do you guys think.

You are correct. Since there is no fan to 'push' the ambient air around the socket, the temperature readings will be higher.

However, a few things can contribute to this 'false' reading.

Using a shim will increase the effectiveness of your watercooling system. Proven.

Even though you have effectively moved the heat outside the case (assuming rad is outside... being 12x7" size!), you still need a fan to exhaust residual heat. Every component in your system generates heat, remember.

zzz... too tired to go on...

You might want to measure your water temps. Socket thermistors stink but the KK266 one compared to the Abit KT7 series really reeks. At least the Abit thermistor touchs the back of the ceramic plate the CPU die is mounted on. The Iwill sensor is buried deep and the socket and relies on the temperature of the air in the socket to get a number. Trust your overclock, not the temps from your motherboard.

I think both of you are right. I will be getting a fan to help get rid of that heat. Colin.. when i looked at the temp probe on the iwill it is very far back in the socket. To prove my temps are false even more when i changed my system to water i was able to overclock even more. If my temps were realy 57c my comp would have crashed because one time it was at that speed with my fan and almost died while now it run it a full load with no probs and higher overclocks. Thx. Any recomendations on how to get accurate temps. By the way my water temps are between 25-30c so that aint the problem either.

your right. You should get an external temp probe and attach it to the side of the core to get the readings. As you said, if your temps were that high, you wouldn't have that overclock. I do disagree that a shim is proven to help. its the opposite, but I do like the safety although the Maze2 mounting is excellent and doesn't really need it.

Where'd you hear that, or is it from personal experience?
