i bought a new Seagate Serial Ata HArddrive for my pc...
i was lead to believe that Serial ata is supposed to go up to 150 mb/s
however mine runs at 42 mb/s average for some reason...now this seems like there is something wrong here.
if anyone can tell me how to make it faster or why it wont go faster that would help...
also recommendations on what HD...other than raptor (too expensive)...would be best for 2 HD raid array..
thanx

Do you have the SATA drivers loaded?

when you installed windows on that disk "IF" you did it tells you to press f6 to load 3rd party drivers did you do that???
Surprised that no one has mentioned that he's not got gonna get anywhere near 150 mbs. That's only the maximum. 42 sounds about right a single drive doing a sustained read.

There's no way you'd get a computer running without the SATA drivers, let alone benchmarking one in Windows, so I'd think he has the drivers loaded. ;)
And Tebore said it. SATA isn't any faster than a 7200rpm IDE drive with an 8MB buffer, with a price difference of about $6 did you REALLY expect it to be? :P It's ok though, you have better airflow! :D
I would say that SATA is still cant't get much faster than PATA 133 due to it's HDD interface still using ultra ata 100 on (Hitachi) 133 on (Maxtor). If you'll consider to having RAID, I will suggest Hiatchi is the best choice. On my experiance I bought 2 pair of Maxtor 160 SATA and found out slower performance and I bought Hitachi (Now in my computer) is lots faster.
My spec.
Hitachi SATA 160Gb X2
intel ICH5R
stripe size -16k
HD TACH 2.70
12.5 (access time)
170 mb (burst read)
99 Mb (Average)
Good Luck

The interface is faster, but the drives aren't.

thats about right..
read up on hds and you will understand the diff between interface maximum and actual throughput.

Burst - max throughput from cache, which, what good is transferring 8mb at 150mb/s? I don't know..
I just know my drive is hella fast. 42mb/s is ok.. I guess.. but normally I get above 50-55. 50 is like, minimum average. Bursts of 100+'ish. I don't have access to HD Tach pics from home (as I am at work).. but..
Take into consideration what you have on your drive.. what programs you have running in the background, do you have anything using up CPU cycles?
Do not be disappointed. You can always get a 10k raptor for SATA... you can't do this with PATA... you can get a 400gb drive, you can't do this with PATA... RAID is also more reliable on SATA.
