mom's compaq is fried. sat in memtest overnight. did 24 passes and came out with 0 errors. pulled the power supply, smelled burnt. replaced with borrowed antec TP380. still freezes.

freezes with nothing connected but HD and floppy. no PCI no opticals. the board is toast. last step is to replace the CPU which i fear will cost more then replacing the board.

and so i need a P3 board. she has a P3 1Ghz 133FSB. needs SDRAM and has to be what looks like microATX. takes a reg ATX psu but is much smaller then my ATX machine. needs onboard video and sound.

old chipset is i810. i'm asking cause i found nothing on newegg and i need some help.

if there's nothing available i'll start pricing a new machine.

By memtest, do you mean "Memtest86"? If it can complete memtest w/o problems then whatever is causing your lockups is not the MB or CPU. Both of those parts are required to run memtest. In fact, if the computer will boot into windows and run long enough for a few simple tasks, then the problem is something other than your CPU, MB, memory or HDD. Is the machine currently overclocked? Is the CPU HSF clean? Is it free of viruses, spyware and trojans? Are you sure about that last answer? They have gotten quiet tricky to spot and even harder to remove! If you want to replace the MB anyway, might I suggest you put something faster and more modern in there. Like this.

Together that CPU & MB are less than the P3 MB. If you need a new PS, this might be what you're looking for. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-163-016&depa=1 Make sure you measure your old PS before ordering to ensure that the new one will fit. Also you might have more room in the case than the old PS takes up, so you might actually get a somewhat larger PS to fit in the space available. It sounds like an eMachines type of PS, in which case it may very well have failed. They have a reputation for doing so.

What OS are you running?
Did you try a fresh install?

i ran memtest86 v3.0 over night. made 24 passes with no errors. this is a compaq machine with a 1Ghz P3 and 256MB of SD. there's no way to overclock it. the HSF is clean. i actually removed the HS and cleaned it, applied AS3 and reseated it thinking possibly it was over heating. the heatsink barely gets warm now. i'm not bent on buying a new board. in fact i'd rather not buy anything.

i borrowed an antec true 380 from my neighbor. even with that in it freezes. i've disconnected everything from the computer. all PCI all opticals.

my first guess was a corrupt OS. i FDISK'd the partitions off made a new one and installed XP Pro fresh. only drivers i've put in were the ones for the wireless card. i'm running XP pro with the same drivers and my machine is fine.

the only other thing i could think of is that the wireless card is defunct in some way but it will do the same thing with the wireless card out.

It's tough to find new socket 370 mobos and even harder to get a micro ATX. I went to pricewatch.com, clicked on motherboard and then did a search for 370 matx and got a few returns. Might try that, but I'd check the reputation of the vendor before ordering.

Have a look at Ebay, I found a SOYO SY-7VEM (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4614&item=3482350360&rd=1) OEM with One Year Warranty for $29.90.

emericanchaos, I know this sounds simple but, let's check just to be sure. I have seen people think their comp is locked-up when it was actually their usb had failed for what ever reason and their mouse and keyboard weren't working. Make sure that's not the problem. You can check to see if the cpu is the problem by running the Sandra burn-in test with just the cpu tests selected. If it crashes, try to see which test it crashed on. If that doesn't turn up anything, run the full bank of test on the burn-in. Watch to see if any of those cause a crash. Also, some further symptoms of the problem would be helpfull. Such as; when it locks up, how long it has been running, what happens when it lockes up, what apps are running. Look for anything that is common to all the instances of the lock ups. It may be the video is bad, especially if you get some sort of weird screen before it locks up. If you can, test this be disabling onboard video and installing a video card that you know is good. Post back here and maybe we can track this down. If you do have to replace the MB, socket A is the way to go, you can get twice the power for less money than you'd pay for a new P3 board. Let us know what you find out. Oh, let's not forget, check for spyware too!
