View Full Version : Overclocking a Duron 700

I'm brand new to this forum. This is my first rig that overclocking is a real option. So I was wondering how well I am doing, and if there is anything easy and cheap I could do to overclock more.

I have a Iwill KK266, Duron 700 @ 923 (7.5x123, 1.8V), 160MB of generic PC-100 RAM, a pretty generic heatsink and fan, and PLENTY of case cooling. Under full load the processor gets up to about 43C. Anythink over 923MHz my mobo has an error starting up.

I have never had it freeze up on me. Oh, I'm running Win2K Pro. I have tried it with 1.85V at about 930MHz, but mobo bios has an error. I haven't updated the drivers for my motherboard, could that help?

Thanks

Your memory is oc'd pretty high a good stick of pc 133 just might get you a little higher. I would go with Crucial very good and its cheap.

First off, welcome to the forums! I hope you enjoy it here :D

Like the others said, get some better RAM. With prices as low as they are you could get a 256MB stick of PC133 for about 30 bucks now (at least it's about 30 quid over here in the UK), and you might as well get some good brand name memory while you're at it - Crucial is a safe bet. As your PC100 is oc'ed to 123MHz at the moment, that's probably what's holding you back when you try and raise the fsb further.

The other upgrade I'd suggest is a better hsf (heatsink-fan in case you're not sure) - while the generic cooler may be ok for lower speeds, if you want to get the higher overclocks you'll need a better cooler. I assume you're using the mobo temperature probe to get your temp readings, and mobo temp probes are notorious for being very inaccurate (in worst cases sometimes by as much as 10C). It's possible your actual temps are closer to 50C, which could explain some of the lockups at high speeds. I bet a better hsf would allow you to oc further.

Hehe. Had to write my first post... I'm new to this board too and I have Duron 800Mhz. I overclocked it to 900Mhz (950Mhz at max, and still working quite fine) with cooler master and Arctic Silver.

:( I broke my first Tbird1333Mhz. Don't know yet how, but it has something to do with lousy installation of cooler.....So I bought the Duron in the meantime when I'm waiting for new TBird.

It's weird that the duron doesn't run in very high temperature when I overclock it more, but still it doesn't work. :(

Other thing: Can anybody say why my computer doesn't start up with every reset??? I have to press reset few times and after that it has reseted all the bios Mhz settings back to default.

i think you "might" be able to go higher with the pc100 ram if u set the CAS latency from 2 to 3.......or u might already have done taht

I was planing to upgrade my RAM recently, as a matter of fact. I almost bought some generic PC-133 RAM, but after reading what you guys said, I'm going to go with Crucial.

I'm going to keep the hsf for now. I have been using VIA Hardware Monitor for temps while Win2K is running. I have also checked the temp in the BIOS after running a full load for awhile, and the temp is around 40-42C. I don't know if thats accurate or not.

Thanks for the help

Crucial is good stuff, man. Just got a stick of PC133 CAS2 stuff, shipped very quickly. I dont think anyone here would argue with that.

Did you try to raise the Vcore? If you didn't do it verycarefully 0.05V per time...
