You should ask your friend how much would he pay for a system.
dumbfish

he doesnt want to pay much more than that for a chip so........
is that the best?

the links work try them again please
REFURBISHED: ABIT IS7,Intel 865PE chipset for Socket 478 P4 ATX motherboard (OEM, BAREBONE) (limit 2 per customer)
mobo and remember
this will NOT be overclocked
That's a good mobo and will support the 800 bus CPUs and Hyperthreading. It would be a shame to not use one of these newer processors, like the 2.8C would be my choice. Obviously that's more cash, but well worth it.
Of the two CPUs you listed, the first one is a Prescott 2.4A which will run hotter. The other is less clock speed, but a Northwood. Neither one is a good choice if you aren't overclocking.
If the budget won't allow upgrading up to an 800 bus CPU, then do this instead: get a 1.8A for super cheap and set the FSB to 133 MHz instead of the default 100 FSB. Tell your friend this is technically NOT overclocking, because Intel uses the same exact CPU and labels it 2.4B and sells them for more cash.
The 1.8A and the 2.4B both have the same 18X multiplier and are made from the same core. Running at 133 FSB is no problem because that's a default bus speed and everything will be in spec. So, it's not really overclocking if you follow my logic (wink, wink). ;)
I have built at least a 1/2 dozen 1.8A/2.4 gig machines for non-overclockers and several of them are still running fine 1 to 1.5 years later. Like I said, all Intel does is remark the 1.8A as 2.4B and makes more profit from them. It's the same exact CPU. So, get an extra 600 MHz for free.

so i should buy this one correct?
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-135&depa=0
Well, that is an OEM 1.8A. Intel OEM CPUIs only have a 30 day warranty and no heatsink/fan compared to the 3 year warranty plus heatsink/fan that comes with the retail box for a mere few bucks more.

HELP my friend just changed his mind and now he wants 800 bus
which is the best chip for the lowest price 800 bus???????
remember this will not be overclocked.

wait, will this be overclocked?
Well, the 2.4C, 2.6C, 2.8C, and 2.8E are all within like $4 in price at newegg. Of those choices, there is no question in my mind, I recommend the 2.8C.

i bought the 2.8c thanks
the recent 1.8A's easily overclock 3.0ghz and higher. your friend may be pleased. even if you dont like to overclock i dont see how u can pass that up for a cheap chip like that. I only had a C1 stepping and was running it at 3.02ghz. a new d0 or d1 stepping one can hit up to probably 3.4ghz
-edit-
oops u already bought one lol
good choice.

Try Fry's Electronics. I just picked up a P4 2.4 Ghz and motherboard for $119, no rebate. Works good.

JMO -
The 2.8C is a great chip, even if you have to **cringes** run it stock. I've got two of 'em, myself.
If your friend never had an HT'd proc before, he/she will notice a substantial improvement when multitasking. And, @2.8, running DC-DDR @1:1, it should handle just about any task req'd.
But even w/the stock HSF, it could very easily take a slight Vcore/Vdimm/FSB 'bump', though, w/no probs whatsoever.
I'd have gotten the 'Retail Box'. It's currently only $4 over the 'OEM' @Newegg, & you get a 3yr, rather than 30 day, warranty. Also, the stock HSF is more than adequate for running stock, or doing some mild OC'ing.
Either way, you've made a very good Intel cpu choice, IMO.

I'd rethink that powersupply if I were you...

I've chosen to take my chances with Thermaltake and after a few months its making noises. It sounds like virbration and it's worse with the fan tuned up.
Your better off with Antec. I've considered a 550 for my buddy with an identical system.

Incase anyone wanted to know the sound was due to the fact that my NB fan weighted my power connection loose.

my friend/customer was happy he went from pentium 400mhz to this 2.8.
but its never enough now im adding a dvd burner and 80gb sata.
but with my video card in it i wasnt very happy because the 2001 3d mark score
was lower than my signature rig.i thought it would blow it away.but
this intel rig kills it in some other areas like loading certain games and
i can install a crap load of stuff at the same time.

Did you optimize the ram timming.
Set the FSB to at least 200. In my opinion over 200 is overclocking:D
dumbfish

yes its at 200 and ram had to run at 3,3,2.5
