thinking of a new cpu, need ideas

i was going to get a barton mobile 2600+ and oc it, however that was like around 100 but then i have been hearing that the AMD Athlon 64 2800+ 512k L2 Cache 64-bit Processor i can get for 170, i know there is like a 20% increase but then i would have to change m/b's *** well and that was going to be a nf7-s for around 100, but i have no clue for the 64.... which cpu should i go for? and m/b if you can help.. i trying to to stay low in money i already am going to have some pc3200 ocz mem for them 1gig dual channel, plz let me know what you think.... i am getting my prices from pricewatch..
 
If you want to stay on the 'cheap' side, you could get a 2400+ Mobile. I believe mine was ~$70 a couple months ago when I got it, and I got fair results.

I can't speak for the 64s though, haven't looked into them :p
 
This thread should have enough materials as a starter for

- A64 CPU, including various versions 754, 939, 940, their model data, ...
- motherboards with the 2nd generation chipsets, Nforce3 250 GB, VIA K8T800 Pro
- suggested price-performance system, high end system, and their tradeoff
- benchmarks and performance comparison of various A64, barton, P4's
