View Full Version : Blue Orb reall the way to go?
I have a leadtek GF2 MX. It came with a HSF. Also came with a hardware monitoring utility.
Today my alarm started going off. Flashing low fan RPM. I checked and it seems the fan is running about 4000rpm to 3000rpm. It's uposed to run at 5000. Alarm goes off at 3600.
Time for a new fan. Is the blue orb the best? Is there something better or is the blue orb it?

ive heard that the blorbs ar pretty good, you just have to lap it, but the best would be if you have an old socket 7 hs/fan lying around....

you will need to do some heavy lapping on the blorb but they work well.
I have a spare socket A HSF. A cooler master 6151h or something. How would I mount it? It seams to big for epoxy. or should I just buy a a cheap socket 7 HSF?

Strap an intel heatsink to it. I think joe did a artical on that. Much better than a Blorb. I'll see if I can find a link for it.
An Intel HS or one of the small Coolermasters like the DP5-5G11A will cool better than the Blorb. If you want to stay low profile, the copper coolers from Millisec (http://www.millisec.com) work great.
I have 2 empty slots under my agp so hight is not a prob.
as long as I have a safe way to mount it

The arlarm sound because the fan speed is too low but if you uy borb or other fan, the fan adaptor is place on the mobo, not the gfx card! So the fan speed can't be read n it will display as zero. I think is better if you tell me the temp of your gfx card first!
Normally runs about 38C to 40C
But now with dying fan it is running at 45C
Fan speed is varying and lower than what it is suposed to be. Sounds like a premature death to me. Wasn't really worried about temp befor but since I have to replace it I want to replace it with the best I can afford.
(right now I only have the memory overclocked, not the core)
I have a leadtek pro and my fan died after a whooping 6 months. Contact them and they will send you a new one for free. But dont use it, it too will die. I did the blue orb thing and never bother to use that monitor crap they have on the cards. It just takes up system resources. Just clock it till it hurts and back off a bit, if your a clocker.

A blorb is ok on a 16 meg card but on a high end card its not worth crap use a p/// stock intel heatsink or a cak38

use a cak38 on the video card man you are serious! the weight on the agp slot is going to be great and you better use lots of epoxy!
I have the profit 2 GTS, and my original HSF lets it run great, I have it over clocked to 210, and 375.
but I also have the cyclone blower right under it. I have another blower on order with 68CFM that I put right above it, and I have the blue orb on order.
so is the blue orb that bad???
how would I stick an actual HSF on it with out cracking the card?

I bought a cheapo gf2 mx 400 for my secondary comp, and when I saw the small, fanless steel heatsink on it I immediatly ran out and bought a borb.. turned out the mother wouldn't fit because of some caps on the card... kinda blows.. anyone know a gpu cooler that is about the same size as the chip so that i can get it to fit?
