hmm,
i'm installing a 1.4 tb with a shim. i have a couple of questions. am i right in thinking that goop goes on both sides of the shim and on top of the core??
also, does anyone know where i can read a review on installing a tb. i want to make sure i dont crack the core.
thanx,
tim
No "goop" goes on the shim at all only on the core.

what's a shim? and do you put the goop on the buttom as well? Can smoe1 recomend a GOOD guide, all of them are poor at describing this.
http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm
A shim is "filler" that goes between the cpu and the heatsink.
They are not neccessary but some use them as they can help prevent crushing the cpu core.

lapping a hsf is general something you do yourself. You take sandpaper and smooth the base for better contact. i wouldnt recommend you doing it unless you really knew what you were doing.

so u only use the goop on the core cpu top? becuase I read somewhere else that you hate to put it under it, where the pins are?!? any1 know what I'm talking about?
The stuff that goes on the pins is dielectric grease. It's only used in systems with pelts that cool the chip below zero. The grease is there to prevent condensation, something you don't need to worry about.
Read the instructions (http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm) from Arctic Silver on how to apply thermal compounds to a CPU core.

Lol, no, no, don't try that, unless you don't ever want your CPU to work...only put the goop on the little square in the middle of the chip, no where else!

k, got it.
In a little while I'll stop asknig newbie questions. I catch on fast and i haven't even started the actaul practice of o/c yet, only theory but I feel quite secure with my knowlege to get it done right.

we are more than willing to help. Ask any questions you have, better to ask and know, than not know and pay.

heh, that's why I'm asking, I usualy like learning the hard way, I like to do my own thinking first, not leech off others but I cant afford to here.
That's good. I would recommend that you read everything you can from the various Web Sites. Not all of them have the best information but you will get a better feel for things. Doing things by asking questions on the forums does not always work. Often times there is that one question that is not asked and things go up in smoke because of it. This seems to happen most with pelt systems. The moral is, read everything you can.
