How would i go about getting a bit more speed out of my computer ?

It is a Dell Dimension XPS D233, Its as it came but with 64k of ram instead of the usual 32. The motherboard is a intel al440lx although i cant be sure. The bios is Pheonix 4.0 release 6.0 version ao7

So what would i have to do to overclock it, would i need a bios update ?

I would be very gratefull if someone could point me in the right direction.

Many thanks TheDogFather :)

i dont think that either dell comps or intel mobos are too good for overclocking.....your best bet would be to get a new mobo, then again i dont know about the older ones

you have everything against you. OEM computer, Intel Mobo, and on top of it the LX chipset. you are only going to get to 75mhz bus which is not much of a improvement speed wise at all. Sorry.

i'm not sure about the intel boards in dell's but
the ones in gateway's could be overclocked by
setting a jumper on the mobo to config mode
and going in and upping the speed. i have upped
a 266 to 300 and a 300 to 333 this way.

Yes I read something about that, although ive since lost the articles whereabouts. Is the jumper called J?? or something like that and you set it to config and thats lets you access some other settings you wouldnt normaly see ? from there i havnt a clue.

I'm not really concerned about vast improvements in speed as im getting a knew computer, but i would like to learn more and gain some experience.

There should be a few jumpers on the 'board, with little writing saying "multiplier" or something like that. All you need to do is track down the manual for the mobo, and set them a little higher....

Actually you should look around for an "FSB" or Front Side Bus jumper.. even better if there is a lil chart/table printed on the board in white that tells you what jumper/open/closed for what speed/fsb.

If you have the manual look around it .. if you dont.. well there is always the might internet ;)

Good luck,

ure better off getting a new duron 700 that will o/c easily to 1Ghz, and a mobo for 100$ shipped www.pricewatch.com

If it's a PII 233 it will probably not be multiplier locked and you can overclock it by using the multiplier jumpers on the motherboard. If you can overclock using the FSB that will be better becuase you'll get improved memory performance as well, but you may have pc66 memory and it may not overclock very far thus limiting your ability to overclock the FSB. Also, there's no guarantee your board will even allow FSB adjustment as 440LX boards were meant for only 66Mhz FSB operation. Some of them had a 75Mhz and 83Mhz FSB setting but not all.

Wow 64k of ram. That's as good as my commodore 64.

Thankyou all for your comments and suggestions, ive been reading with interest.
Satan I guess you relise i put 64k by accident, I meant 64mb. Its a bad computer but not that bad.
On the subject of memory, I thought memory had to be in pairs but theres three slots on my board. Could I add another and if so would it have to be 32mb or could it be bigger ?
I cant find any jumpers that seem to relate to FSB or multiplier all I can find are:
The one for normal, config and recovery.
A two pin one below this that seems to be labeled j8a1.
A four pin one with telephony wrote next to it.
A five pin one labelled pc/pc1
And a white three pin one between the CPU and the RAM that has writing so small I cant make it out, but it doesnt say FSB or multiplier.
peppy you suggest a duron 700. Which mobo do you recomend and why that CPU, is it just because of price and am I right in thinking ill need knew RAM too ?
Will the knew mobo fit in my case easily and if I took that route would I have to reformat my hard drive ?
Thankyou all once again for your patience and help.

not all memory has to be in pairs.

Yes those were the good old days back when there were Bulitin Boards instead of the Web as we now know it. And by the way there is an Internet II that is much faster than this one.

Ah, my first faltering steps into overclocking, and I think my first post on any forum.

A Celeron on a Slocket, SoftFSB, off I went whoosh. ;)

The Intel "Atlana" 440LX board was used in a huge number of machines, Dell and otherwise. I'm sure a copy of the users manual exists, and may still be on Intel's website.

Being an Intel board you can kiss off all notions of altering the fsb. LX chipset boards set the multiplier via jumper though, so with an unlocked cpu like yours you can use them to select 266 or 300MHz. A lot of 233's would do 300 on stock voltage, essentially all will do 266.

Some of those jumpers on the motherboard no doubt control the multiplier. If you can't track down the manual on the board you will have to reason it out, and perhaps move some and see what happens.
