i love my computer.... in fact, i had a gf dump me cuz she didn't want to compete for my love... she said something about feeling that i cared about my computer more than i cared about her... :-/ whatever... my computer's never hurt my feelings... i don't argue with it.... it did hurt me physically a couple of times though... but i guess its my fault that i touched her where i shouldn't have...

come think of it... how many of you guys named your computer after some girl???

Captain Newbie

I name my computers for ships. Challenger, Surprise,, etc.

But I do talk to them. Occasionally it's like "come on baby, hold together!"

Go and watch Gone in 60 seconds, and see how he talks to Elenanor (sp?)...
That is how I treat my computer.

No, that would be weird. I do swear at it though. And abuse it when it doesn't work. Mouse go bye bye :(

Yea I do and they both have names. I name mine after elements like my main rig is "Titanium" and my Linux Box is "Oxygen" dunno what I'm gonna name my new lappy though maybe "Carbon", "Krypton" or "Lithium"

BigRed

I dont have names for my computers but I treat them with love, spend time with them when sick (spyware/virus), buy them new things, but I dont ever abuse them when they upset me :p

Hell I have even slept with my laptop a few times, lol (Fallen asleep in bed while typing on it for you people with your minds in the gutter).

I guess I treat them like people.

I use my tower as a chair sometimes. :D

As for names, it's usually "F...WORK YOU STUPID PIECE OF S..." :p

Good thing my case is steel. It can take a pretty good beating. :D

My (ex) girlfriend did that once. Sat right on the case

While it is full steel, strong steel...*sigh* She had to cover the vent on the top.

Coincidentally...that wasn't long before our falling-out...

Hey, I sit on top of my Aluminum case... I skelotized the thing too and it hasn't bent under my weight.

BTW, I run a lot of graphically demanding demos and I'll start yelling at my poor computer when it drops a frame!!! I'm psycho...

I usually only talk to my pc when im mad at it. but there are times when i'm nice to her, usually when she is upgrading software of firmware of something to that effect. I do hit her when i'm mad at her. Is that being crewl?

No, I don't normally kick, smack, slap, yell at, throw, pour pepsi on, or punch the people I know!!! :)

ok. maybe it's just me, but if you're losing girlfriends over a computer, you sound like you've got some issues... :-/

i dont have a name for mine either, unless of course something goes wrong.. then its usually a four letter word of some sort.

That line never stands a chance in court, but sadly, its what a lot of people are told when they are abused.

I spend more time with my computer than my non-existant girlfriend. maybe that's the reason :-/

Before I actually made my own and was using a crappy Compaq I used to yell at it like crazy. :o I actually remember being so mad I kicked it once, where I kicked it was the front so no actually components got hurt.

I used to be like common boy no fatal errors. :)

Now that I have a really nice computer it's a lovely relationship between us.

One more vote for only when I am mad at it. Usually, I find that the words "I built you and I can take you apart" help. Not help with the misbehaving computer mind you but help as in the sense of making me feel better.

if u treat your computer well, it will treat you well, i haven't named mine, but i talk to it, caress it, and people who don't usually have trouble with it.

they get frustrated, THEY DON'T LISTEN TO IT'S NEEDS! they don't understand their partner, and they abuse them.. and there's the physical abuse, which i would never tolerate.

BRAINIAC (main rig) works fine. The things that it encounters (yahoo, AIM, compatability) ....drive me nuts....then you gotta have windows act up

LINIAC (test rig) ...all i do is yell at it....all this linux stuff is SUPPOSED to work, follow directions EXACT, and i get NOTHING..stupid crap....

So if swearing, yelling, smacking count..YES I DO

I listen to its needs. Sometimes I hear little creaks, or high pitched grinding noises or bumping around. Then I open her up and low and behold...there are little grasshoppers! Most of them are dead though :bang head

The older of my two can force meow into something close to "food", "love" and "hello". As a parrot he doesn't compare favorably but then he isn't a parrot. For a cat, it is a pretty neat trick.

grasshoppers? im curious..HOW?

hah yes someone who doesnt htink im crazy. My gf is all "ive never heard your cat say mendot your nuts". My aunt has one that can say "No" and "Milk". My older cat chessy acts like she can talk. ull say something and she responds with a bunch of odd noises. She cant say meow, just mow.

THe other one is dumb as a brick. We think its in the breed to be this dumb. She just screams! then u say her name (Spaz) and she like falls down, runs away....runs into a wall...etc..

How about this, my cat talks to my computer. She'll sit on my lap, and complain at it. Or ill yell at it ,, and the cat mows at it too. Very funny.

Chaos_Being
07-24-04, 02:35 PM
I've lived with cats long enough that they're actually pretty easy to understand. Just watch the body language and listen to the different inflections in the meows- they may not be making words (or maybe they are with some of the kitties mentioned here :)), but they can certainly get across emotions and needs.

I treat my computer as a pet...
I talk to it when it's good, maybe say thank you when I reach a benchmark goal.
However, when it doesn't do what I want to do I get really annoyed with it usally threaten it with "You do have an off button!".

Other than that I don't try to have a conversation with it.

I treat my computers like lumps of steel, plastic and silicon.

Of course, there are people I treat worse, but I generally treat people as I would prefer they treat me.

A vote of no.
(Although it is possible that I am crazy. Separate issue. ;))

I got a lawyer to get one of mine back to me. I had some of my stuff at a girlfriends and after things went really bad (found out I was one of 5 guys that was engaged to her plus..... well its a really good Jerry Springer show) it wasnt much but she wouldnt give back the computer, it was not fast and not worth much money, but it was the first case I ever modded and it was special to me, so I paid for a lawyer (they have some use at times) to get it back (and my Alvarez acoustic guitar). Its a nice folding machine now :) The guitar went to a cousin for a graduation present, he plays much better than me.

SewerBeing
08-22-04, 09:48 PM
I named my main rig SewerBeing, my server is called Sewer. I talk to both of them when I'm happy, bored or really mad at them. Sometimes they behave like children. Error, Error and then it works. I dont hit them or abuse them, thats just wrong.

Stedeman
08-22-04, 11:53 PM
It seems many feel their rig is a she. I always felt if it had a gender it would be male...It dose just what you tell it to, it only complains when it's about to die, it will take how ever many requests you throw at it till it crashes and you have to pry into it to find out what type of day it had. Seems more like a guy to me than a girl. Maybe you guys must have some messed up software.
...waits for the beating.
...;)

PS J/K and I only talk to it when mad (or when using speech dragon)

08-24-04, 01:57 AM
Who, Charles? :p

My main computer is always named Charles for some reason. My server(dual P2) is Nikki. And my laptop is getting a female name, just havn't thought of one yet... Probably Vanessa though, it looks like a Vanessa. lol

I dont treat them like people, except that I dont let anything happen to them. Other than that, they can take care of themselves, and when they dont, they get to be turned off for a while.

KnowlesTech
08-25-04, 04:14 PM
Never treats them as ppl, I treat them like the lower forms of life that they are ;)
All my PCs have names but thats just for networking, we start at alpha, beta, Main, hers, Gars, 90, 100, 366, 400, 566, 650to850, 1gbson, 2-2gamer. 30main, 6hds, OCmain... etc, all names are just indicative of the PC itself.

One of my friends always pets the computer whenever it doesnt work for her. She then encourages it to work, and surprizingly.. it usualy works  its really pretty amazing to watch.. she has this magical touch, or something

but ya.. i do not talk to my computer as if it were a person nor do i hit it in any way. I admire my comp too much to hit it. I put in a lot of time building and customizing it that i cannot bring myself to hit it in any way. But on the flip side, i do not compliment it either.

It pisses me off but I usually don't yell at it like I yell at people, except when it freezes, but I usually yell at what caused it to freeze rather than yelling at my computer.
