View Full Version : help with more than 512 W\win 9X
can someone explain to me "in detail" how to use more than 512 with win ME.
I've heard you can, but I can't get it right.
also will it help I've also heard that more than 256 is over kill.
I have 512 in it right now and I have another 256 sittin in a ziplock bag thats buggin me cuz I can't use it:)
I know this ain't what you want to hear but I would suggest upgrading to win2k or even a free os like linux. what are you doing with the machine that you need so much ram?
a lil bit of everything, heavy gamer, div X movies, digital home video, and MP3's. I know I probably don't need that much but if I have it I like to use it:)

El is right if you want to use 512mb of ram Win2K is the best way to go.
Win 9.x cant use 512mb properly and the only performance gain you would see between 256 and 512 would be in graphic intense applications...this isnt what you wanted to hear but 9.x isnt designed for large amounts of ram.
but if you want to give it a try there are memory managers that might be able to help you out you can find a bunch here (http://www.tweakfiles.com/memory/)

Hi, Are you still looking for a way to use the mem?
Look at techtv.com under screen savers web area I know they have talked about this one before I watched that show one night.
You have to make only a small change and boom it works fine they had 600+ MB working in win98.
I have not had this problem yet, only at 384MB now.
:) :) :) :cool:

Well, normally I don't like to do this because if I do it for one pretty soon I'll have to do it for all but...
...If you send it to me I'll use the memory for you (just don't tell anyone about it ok?)
:)
You can try the Win9X lrg amounts of memory fix. http://support.microsoft.com/suppor...s/Q253/9/12.ASP
(Copy and pasted from someplace else I posted feeling lazy)
I had a problem going over 512MB but not @512MB, Win98se. The card would not load at 768MB and would only run 16color 640x480. I entered my on vcache settings in system.ini and problem solved.
This is vcache not virtual memory (I see it cross confused alot) for 512MB this should work.
[vacache]
MinFileCache=65536
MaxFileCache=131072
That's a 64MB minimum/128MB max
For me with 768MB I use.....
[vacache]
MinFileCache=65536
MaxFileCache=196608
That's a 64MB minimum/192MB max
Or you can download cacheman I guess it does about the same thing as those settings,myself I can do without that type of stuff.
did you see an improvement in performance?
My system would let me load with 768 but I would always get the big blue screen when I tried to open a game. it would still play, but a lil crapy.

Here is the scoop on the 512 MB in windows 98 from The Screen Savers

Hope it helps.........
I didn't see any real performance upgrade in having more than 512mb but, I regularly play WWIIOL which has a notorious memory leak. With the game code and the ram requirements I avoid any swaping from disc with the 768mb (game and backround progs have used as much as 700mb. http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze24h2j/Mykex/beaft1.jpg The blue line represents ram usage and you can see that even though windows wont utillize it all ,programs will.

That is a good link. Its a workaround of sorts but valuable info none the less.

Hmm.... Upgrade to Win2K. It's far better anyway :)

The cacheman fix worked for me with 786 mbs of sdram and win98..don't got to W2k if you are big time into games..not a good platform for games..xp will be. I run w2k now with 512ddr, but don't game much anymore.
