View Full Version : Constant Lockups/Crashes

Seems with this 9800pro I have more problems than I can shake a stick at:
opengl :: d3d :: no matter what game, horrible FPS compared to my old ti4600

Doesnt matter what settings I change, whether its super high detail with FSAA and the works, or if its lowest settings possible, games get low fps. Im on the newest cats and newest DX drivers.

As far as crashing and lockups, almost any game I play will freeze for any given amount of time or crash completly. Counterstrike for example, it seems to crash when blood is sprayed up close or sparks from a bullet hitting a wall. Other games like Tribes2 get random lockups.

Some experiences lately have been that I'll boot up, launch an app and pc immediatly reboots; Windows (XP home SP1) pops up with a page saying its a graphics driver causing the problem.

Any help on these issue would be greatly appreciated, just really really dissapointed in how this card performs compared to my outdated 4600.

You do have the power thing plugged in and a good PSU right? And there arn't any obvious problems (like the HS not making good contact?)

Its an Antec 350W, and no havent any problems with anything else. Good temps, no artifacts, all hardware is properly seated.

Hmmm, could be overheating. Try removing the stock cooler, clean off the thermal goop with alcohol, apply some fresh thermal goop and reseat the cooler. If that doesn't work, RMA the card.

I've thought about this, but why would it only freeze at certain points? Its not a given amount of time; I could play for 3 minutes or 30 minutes before it happens.

What if you try the Omega drivers?

Try putting your CPU back to stock, just to help isolate the problem.

I'm having similar problems with my new 9800PRO from Sapphire. I've tried two different sets of drivers, 4.3 & 4.5 Cat. I've reset my CPU to stock settings as well with no luck. I also turned off fast write in the BIOS. Debating sending the card back at this point...

Brian

P.S. Do we need to do a thorough clean out of video drivers before installing new ones?

When I tried the omega drivers, it said just delete the ATi Control panel.

you probably still have the dirty scummy remminants of those nasty nvidia drivers lurking in your system ;)

2 Things:
1) Why does that matter?
2) I've formatted with the card installed.

So you did a fresh install?
Nvidia drivers and
Ati driver clash like maddogs....
cleaners are ok but nothing beats a fresh windows install...

depending on what your other components are, can you record your voltage readings somehow? it may be your psu. if the card trys to display some kind of tough graphic and requires a boost in power to do it and the psu cant deliver then you get problems. i think a 350 watt is the bare minimum required to run the card.
if you have an older psu or can get one plug in the card on its own power supply to see if thats the problem.

Well I'll backup everything tonight and give this a shot.

hey Goofyman23 are you overclocking at all? It might be the memory and not the video card. I had a similar problem with my system recently.

Is your memory set to 1:1 in the bios? If not try that. It worked for me. hope it helps.

Yeah, that error you posted sounds like a memory error. Try running Memtest86+ (www.memtest.org).

Memory is at 6:6 and I dont have a floppy drive, would prime95 work?

EDIT: Also, its DDR400 memory and I'm running it at 370.

Could it perhaps be video memory (not system memory)?

Sounds like your OC'd memory is not up to the task of feeding data across the AGP bus to the new card. I'd say you need to reduce your memory OC back to stock and re-OC it after you get the video card working. Also try adjusting the AGP memory size. I set mine to 256m, but I have a gig of ram to work with.
Just as a matter of procedure, I always reset everything to stock whenever I add new hardware because changing hardware upsets the whole apple cart....best to start over when adding new hardware.

I'm getting some odd crashes now, while I'm in windows too.

Last night I was just listening to music and browsing teh web, and it just crashed and rebooted itself. I'm thinking it may be the power supply.

And btw, what determines what the AGP memory should be set at?

Mr.Radar

It's usually called "AGP aperature" in the BIOS.

Could be...
Have you been watching the 5v, 12v, 3,3v rails?
Specially the 12v?

This I know, couldnt remember off the top of my head, what I was wondering is what determines what you should set it at... IE 64....128...256...etc.

As far as my problems, I dropped all my voltages back to default, and clocked my 1700 / memory back at normal settings. So far all is well, once my psu comes in (antec true480) I'll bump em back up and see if that was the case.

Alright, after uninstalling the NVidia drivers, and reinstalling the Omega drivers, I'm still having trouble myself. Random crashes in BF1942 and when just in Windows (Although, the windows crashes haven't been happening lately) While in BF1942, I get a pop up saying that the VCU has been reset by the driver because it stopped responding or something close to that.

I don't think this is a power supply problem, as I have an Antec 480 true blue PS. I've tried several different drivers, nothing is overclocked...my last idea is to just send it back to Monarch...which I know they will give me some kind of trouble for returning it. Anyone have any ideas?

Greetings!

Could be heat related...
Try opening your case and puting a desk fan pointing to it!

Got the new psu in, and now for some reason my Volcano 12 wont allow me to raise or lower the fanspeed....?????

This is really putting a hurt on me, as now I cant run anything cpu intensive otherwise my temps skyrocket.
