View Full Version : CD Burner Problem

I built a new computer for a friend and he has a problem. Both DVD player and CD-R/RW player/recorder are on the same IDE controller #2. Both hard drives are on controller #1. In Bios all four drives show up.
The computer has XP Pro installed. Once the computer boots into windows everything appears to be AOK. Both hard drives can be accessed and the DVD and CD-R/RW will play music and will install software from either drive, but here is the problem.
When the CD-R/RW tries to burn a CD-R the disk gets about 80 percent complete and then an error pops up. We have tried Nero 6, CD Creator, etc. All with the same results.
Next we tried another CD burner in the new computer. The CD-burner is a known working burner, but we receive the same results as the new burner.
On controller #2 cable we have the slave CD-R/RW connected to the middle plug while the end plug is connected to the DVD set as a master. Could this be the problem? Should this be reversed?

reverse it and try it again
You'd be best served by having a HD and either the CD or DVD on each channel. Having the optical drives on the same channel can cause more problems than Master/Slave configuration.

I know that some say that having an optical drive on the same channel as the HDD slows the HDD. I don't know about that myself. What I do for my own machine (see sig) is to put the HDD and DVD-ROM on channel #1 (primary). The burner goes on channel #2 (secondary). This way, when I am burning, the source drive and the destination drive have a seperate channel from which to xfer data.
edit Try setting both drives to CS and leave them connected on the same IDE channel.

I have no sure answer on this either but I have always had best results with burners installed as master or slave with a hard drive.
I have always had a higher percentage of problems when I set them up as slave with any other optical drive as master.
I have heard that this can slow down the hdds, but never tested it; irrelevant to me anyway if it is the only way my burner can make cds instead of coasters. ;)
I'd give that a shot and see how it goes. If you STILL have trouble, install it alone on the channel- there may be something screwed up in WinXP. Hard to believe, maybe, but possible. ;):D

That's the correct slave/master configuration-don't need to reverse it.
FYI mine both work on the same IDE channel. I don't know why this would matter...but I have my CD-R/RW set as master, DVD as slave. Try assigning the CD-R/RW as master.
The other idea of putting the optical drives on separate channels is what I would try next if that doesn't work.
[/minor threadjack] Awesome O/C on that CPU DodgeViper (see sig). What's your vcore?

Problem solved. The IDE Controllers that was installed from the Epox MB drivers from Nvidia/Via was the problem. I did a roll back of the driver to MS drivers and everything is working correctly. My hard drives share IDE controller 1 while the DVD & CD drives IDE share controller 2.

I guess I need to update my sig. I no longer have that system, but I still own a pair of the CPU'S and the CPU in my sig. At the time that I was water-cooling the V-core to get to thE clock speed OF 2614 was 2.1 volts.
