View Full Version : Detonator 4 20.XX new Nvidia drivers wanted!!
I'm all set to start tinkering tomorrow night. Tried finding a *cough* sneak preview copy for windows 2000 OR 98, no luck.
Please please please please post here if you find a place with them for download... should be any day now!
All I found was the 14.40 drivers.
Reactorcritical.com (www.reactorcritical.com) would probably be one of the first to have the new drivers when they come out though. Keep giving this site a check...

Hehe, I'm looking forward to those new 20.xx drivers myself. I want the extra 30% gain in performance from my G3. Finally, some drivers to try to utilize what the G3 has to offer more then the Det3's.

ami right in assuming that the 20xx drivers will do nothing for my Gf2 Pro? will they only the GF3?

Luckily you are wrong on that one. Anantech tested the drivers on a GF2 MX 400, GF2 Pro, and a GF3. The best gains were on the GF3. But the GF2 Pro did show a 4% to 9% improvement @ 1024x768.
I bet if you had a Radeon 8500 nVidea would make sure you had those Det 4 drivers! :)

will it help a geforce256?
upgrading from 1290 to 1440 lowered my 3dmark2001 score by 100 points
There was some confusion with the driver release date. The Detonator 4 drivers were not intended to be released this week. The original release date for the Detonator 4 drivers was going to be sometime in September however our engineers have been working hard to accelerate the release date sooner. In addition, we are providing further tweaks to improve on the performance over what has been benchmarked already. It won’t be to much longer for the release of the Detonator 4 drivers. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

Thanks Placid. I have a feeling threads like this one will become more common as that day approaches.
Darn them! I suppose I can wait. Just this once.

Does that mean that they are still coming out next weak and they apologize for releasing them early or that they wont be released next week as announced?

They won't be out until September.

14.61 drivers (http://www.m3dzone.com/article.php?sid=1148)
I think nVideo pretty much lied to Toms Hardward, and Anandtech. I mean really, these guys get in a Radeon 8500 card to do a preview on. nVidea says, here use these "new" drivers to test out the GF3 with against the Radeon. nVidea tells these guys this driver will be out this week, same week they preview the Radeon Card.
Basically, nVidea supplied Anandtech and Toms Hardware with stacked drivers that look good on certian games, but not all. The certian games they happen to be good at, are the most popular ones used for benchmarking. GO figure that one out. THen to make it even worse, they LIED, yes folks LIED about the release date to these websites, so they would test the GF3 with these drivers against the Radeon 8500. I don't think it was a mistake, or confusion on part of the driver release. I mean COME ON, do you guys REALLY think they messed up, and ACCIDENTLY released these drivers a month early?

I tried out those drivers last night and got a 500 point decrease in 3DMark2k1. Needless to say, they suck.

I'm certain someone killed Kennedy from the grassy knoll, but nvidia stacking the deck I have very little evidence of...
Howver, I think you're probably right, but speculation isn't my strong point. This stinks regardless of their intentions, I just want the boost in performance ;).

Detonator 4 arrives September
IN A MARATHON international call with Nvidia we heard quite a few official things. Here is one of them. When will be able to see free and high performance Detonator 4 drivers?
When you go on the Internet and see new versions of drivers on some site you probably go nutz and just want to download the blinking thing. Usually we are talking here about beta products that are buggy enough to make just enough troubles but you really, subconsciously, want just one thing.
To make your $400 card run faster.
Just because you see some benchmarking from some lucky reviewers like our friends Tom and Anand, Detonator 4 or 20.xx doesn't mean something is launched.
Nvidia has decided to launch these drivers at the beginning of September. So far, we are not sure that Nvidia does not want or just is still not ready to give any specific date but we don't have any specific date.
We've already heard that this driver will be launched before the Radeon 8500 and that actually comes pretty close in terms of performance.
Nvidia also said that improving drivers is really hard task and involves much hard work but it actually somehow succeeded in tweaking its own creations and made even better drivers. I'm still sticking by my previous claims and I believe that Graphzilla is suppressing performance and unleashes it whenever it feels threatened. Honestly I don’t blame them for that. It sure will make a lot of kids happy with a few extra FPS. Isn't that what we all want? Really fast cards with 100 + FPS in Quake 3! It's another question whether we actually need that, but Plathon is not around for some few hundreds of years to help us in this thesis. µ

Nope, those have been on my machine for a week now, the 20x versions are the ones we seek!!

How are those 14.70's? are they an improvement from 12.90 or are they like the 14.60?
TranceBear
08-27-01, 02:53 PM
Well, I was looking for a better driver for my XP machine and the 14.70 are the best so far. If you have a 9x or ME I would stick with the 12.90 until the new ones come out.
Sump Bump.
I can't let this one die with the 20.80 drivers coming soon.
BTW--Silly question, but do you use w2k drivers in/for XP? I don't see any "XP" drivers yet, but it appears these 14.XX are just that... what gives? I'm going to XP this weekend and need to know!

Keeping this one alive - I want the 20xx drivers too!
This is odd - there was a news item at nvmax that stated they have the 20.80 drivers too - now it's gone.
Found it - do a search with the news frame's search icon, using "detonator" as the keyword.
One of the most interesting things we learned about was the incredible testing that goes into NVIDIA's hardware and software. For example, this picture below you can see the same arrangement of racks that you'd normally find in the datacenter of a web host. These 4,000 Linux machines run nightly and test every build of NVIDIA drivers that is worked on during the day.
This row of Sun machines is used for similar purposes; each one of the first two big cabinets are worth around $4M.
I guess they are working on it :)

Rumor has it Zoiah was trying to impersonate a nvidia employee to get them.
Now his site say's this:
Currently offline due to some legal issues.
Will keep you updated once we know more.
P.S.: I also love to see how people are judging me (Zoiah) and accusing me of bad things with only hearing one side of the story (Which is incorrect btw. ). And no, the thing between me and NvMax has nothing to do with with these legal issues.
