I have a battery back up that I purchased about 4 years ago from best buy because they claim that they help regulate the current flow coming to the comp and monitor. The battery is now dead, so the three slots on it that are battery back-up don't work. So I am curious if this is really needed, or if this is a sales sceme. I need to buy something with more plugs, and I was curious if I need to spend the money. Thanks

It's not needed. PSUs are designed to take currrent that is slightly out of spec so unless there is something really wrong with the power coming into your house it's not nescessary.
Just buy new batteries. I've got a APC 500va that takes 1 battery. The battery store down the street sells then for $43 a peice. (beats buying a new ups) Do you just need more outlets? If your devices don't use much power, you can use a power strip to make more outlets.
As far as the ups regulating voltage and current, I'm sure they do to an extent, but if your worried about voltage and stuff from your outlets, you've got bigger problems to deal with. You want your ups to do 2 things- be able to keep your main computer components (ie- computer+monitor) running, while you or the ups saves everything, and shuts down properly. And just as important- you want it to protect everything that's pluged into it from overvoltage. (ie- lightning/shorts)

well I live in a brand new house, so I am not overly concerned with huge variations in current, and I don't think the 40 bucks is worth a new battery, I don't need it that bad.
