I'm running an amd k6 2 400 at 2.2v(i know not the best) and i wanna get it to 550. i already have it at 500 but when i set the muliplier at 5.5 and increase the voltage it gets through post and all that, but i cant boot windows, the windows boot logo comes up and it freezes. Any advice?

You may be at the limit of that CPU. Follow the accepted practices of overclocking. Make sure that you have good cooling, I've had good results with socket A hsf's on K6's, particularly the Global Win FOP32. Once you have adequate cooling you will have to increase your voltage to the proccessor, if this is a standard K6-2 probably at least 2.7, if you feel lucky, you can go to 2.8. However if you have a K6-2+ you will have to be more conservative in the voltage increases, their default is 2.0, I would limit the increase to 2.5 in that case.

Another thing that I've read of good results with, is removing the metal cap on the proccessor. Although I've never tried this, it sounds like it may be worth the effort. From what I understand of this proceedure, you begin in one corner and work carefully around the perimeter of the CPU, gently prying the cap from the ceramic with an X-ACTO knife or something similar.

Hang loose on this thread, I'm sure you will get more replies soon. In the mean time check the posts from the last two weeks or so, there seems to have been a renewed interest in the K6's in the last couple of weeks, you may find some ideas in these threads as well.

Good Luck!

What FRANK said. I de-capped my chip, did a pretty hideous job of it too! I wound up with a lot of surface damage on the chip when I was done but fortunately it still worked. There's a thread entitled "AMD K6-2 overclock" in the AMD cpu section thats many pages long and full of info. It has a drawing of what the chip under the cap looks like and what you need to do to remove it without damaging the chip. You should find the answers your looking for in that thread. One thing that isn't there that I'd like to point out is that FRANK uses a socket A fan / sink system for extra cooling and I used removing the cap and replacing it with a lapped copper coin. Both of us have had good results, better than the average overclock limit of 50mhz that most people hit. Perhaps you could get a HUGE boost if you tried BOTH. Anywho its just a suggestion.

Good luck.
