Elephant - S3 ViRGE 3D 2MB PCI
...I don't remember much before this card.

Diamond MultiMedia - Stealth II S220 - Rendition Verite V2100
OMG, this thing ran Quake 2 at 35fps 800x600 with my K6-200MHz. So many LAN party memories with this.. :(

Diamond MultiMedia - Viper V550 - nVidia Riva TNT 16MB PCI
...then I got this... It eventually died, being an OEM from a very unreliable dealer... oh, I forgot to mention, this card and Quake 2 eventually had specialized drivers for the 3D Now! format... blazing.

ATI RAGE FURY MAXX - Dual Rage 128pro with 64MB PCI
This card... owned. It is a crying shame it never supported 3d in WinXP :(

S3 Savage 4 32MB PCI
...this is what I was force into purchasing to run 3d in XP... needless to say, I was still stuck in the second dimension.

MadDog - GeForce 4 MX440 64MB PCI
..I'm still stuck with this, but I guess it is much better than the prior -- I can play WC3 and Unreal 2k4 (low detail of course).

In closing... I have yet to own a "top of the line card" unless it was 6 months after it came out. The Fury maxx was ATI's last attempt before moving to the Radeon series... I think that card would still top a 9200pro. If it worked in XP... :p

S3 Virge PCI 4MB
nasty little thing - ran command conquer smoothly though so did me :)

GeForce 2 MX 32MB
my first "proper" gfx card I suppose, ran alot of things at the time nice - but then as more challenging FPS were brought out, SOF2 is one I remember playing alot at that time - it was time to replace...

GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128MB
still got this now - does well in most games, shame about farcry and shame about its distinct lack of ability to use AA or AF

Radeon X800 XT 256MB *pre-order*
this is gonna rox my cotton sox :) - think I might post some farcry comparison shots from acceptable running on my Ti4200 and what framerates im actually getting and acceptable running on this and what framrates...watch this space :)

I do have another in an old pc that I have never used or bothered looking at - so ill have to have a look at ammend it to this post :D

Matrox M3D
A good video card for the time, and it came with Hexen 2.
Voodoo Banshee
Also a nice card.
Voodoo 4 4000
FSAA was an amazing feature at the time. 32bit color was still a little slow. :-/
Voodoo 5 5000
I loved this card. It is a shame what happened to 3DFX.
Radeon 7000
This wasn't much better than the Voodoo 5. :o
Geforce 4 TI 4600
Morrowind was awsome with pixel shaders. :)
Radeon 9700 Pro
It was incredible how much faster this was compared to the Geforce 4.
Radeon 9800 Pro
An amazing video card, I adore this card.

Paradise Pipeline PCI
Cruddy 2D only card with the first PC that was really mine.

Rage Fury Pro 32mb tv in/out
Darn good card for the 70 bucks my dad paid at the time. This came with my first good PC, a PIII600E which was the system which got me into overclocking. I was very happy thinking that more ram meant my card was awesome. Until I saw my friends GTS playing UT at 1280x1024...it was beautiful.

Geforce 2 Pro
I did months of research before buying this card due to the huge investment 150 dollars looked like at the time. This card purchase was the one that birthed my video card buying guide. The research I did then gave me a great base for the guide. I loved it, it was 3 times as fast as my RFP, played all my games at 1280x1024.

Radeon 8500LE
Another bargain pick up for 80 dollars two years ago. It still chugs along and plays anything I throw at it. I do want to upgrade, but the money isn't looking right :(.

Onboard crap i810 Intel grahpics
Onboard graphics on my old PII system (currently sitting in my basement). I don't think I played many games with these grahpics (other than the software rendered Duke Nukem 3D).

All-in-Wonder Rage 128 Pro (PCI 16-Meg version)
I've had a fair amount of trouble with it but I eventually got it to work perfectly. Half-Life's intro ran at 30 fps at 640x480. I remember paying $50 for this card and I'd say it's the best bang/buck I've spent on any of my computer components. Also, video capture rocks.

Family Comp S3 ProSavage 3 (or something like that) onboard graphics
Came with the system. Didn't work too well with some games (Startrek Voyager: Elite Force text was screwed up). Didn't last too long either (see below).

Family comp: Radeon 7500 non-Pro 64 Meg AGP
Me and my dad went into CompUSA to buy an original Radeon for $50, we walked out with this card which was $100. This card remained in the family comp for a looong time.

Mad Dog Multimedia Prowler64TV
This card sucked. I saw it for $50 at CompUSA and figured "64 megs, it must be faster..." The two demos included with it ran verrrry bad. Half-Life was very jerkey, even with the software renderer (to me it seems impossible too). I put my old Rage128 back in and kept it in until I got my Radeon 9800. This card is now residing in my grandpa's Duron 1.2 system (which I built for him from spare components I had).

Family comp: PowerColor Radeon 9100 non-Pro 64-meg
The Radeon 7500 was having serious overheating issues with modern games so that went and this came. This was a referb off Newegg and has pretty much maxed out the family comp (1 GHz Athlon).

Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128 Meg
This card has been great, though I hardly use it. It's not a spectacular OC'er, but it does XT speeds and I'm happy with that. I've actually considered selling it because I use it so little and would like to have my VIVO capabilites of my AiW Rage128 Pro back, however I want to be able to play HL2 with so it'll stay at least until I finish that.

Came with my first PC. HP P1 233 machine.

Voodoo 3 2000 PCI
I used this card for a good 3 years if not longer.

MSI Geforce 4 Ti4400
Always was and still is a good card.

Saphire 9800 Pro
My current beast.

Matrox MGA mystique 4mb
Nice card, too young to do anything with it though

Diamond Monster 3dII - Voodoo II accelerator 4mb
Hooked this up to the MGA Mystique, ran UT in 1024*768 quite alright, for a total of 8mb RAM

3DFX Voodoo 3 3000 AGP 16mb
I was all excited when me and my dad went out to buy this, i can still remember me begging for a geforce 256, which was THE card that time in my neighbourhoud, but the 256 was to expensive, so we went for the voodoo III, my dad told me i could put it in the voodoo II accelerated rig, i was all happy untill 5 minutes later i had discovered that that rig didnt have an AGP slot, thats when i started to want to learn more about PC's :)

Geforce 2 mx400 64mb
Being a great jump into the 64mb realm for me, purchasing this card about a year ago really excited me since i hung around the voodoo III for so long, this is the card i still use now in my P III 600E rig that is now memtesting at 750mhz, also made my own cooling for it for which im still looking for a blower fan, gotta love this card!

Geforce 2 mx400 64mb PASSIVE
This card belonged to a friend of mine before i went to the store and got him a fx5200, i got the old card as a gift for installing the fx5200 :) too bad that a week after that i found out that if i made the geforce 2 actively cooled and OC'ed it, it might even kick the fx5200's ass lol :) this card is now in my mums PC where im typing this, where it replaced an old riva TNT 2 32mb card, which is now running inside the PC of the friends mother

Club3D Radeon 9800pro 128mb
This card was a part of my new PC that we were building a couple of months ago, a huge step from my 750mhz rig, because this 2.4ghz rig runs nearly everything i throw at it, card is showing artifacts at times, but i think thats because my PSU cant handle the power draw...replacing PSU soon :)

-----------------------
3 weeks ago, i looked into the old amd k6 233mhz rig, and found out that the voodoo 2 accelerator didnt have any cooling, neither did the MGA Mystique, shocked me because i never would have thought that GFX cards didnt always need cooling lol :)

Matrox Millenium II
In the Dell I had when I was 9.
nVidia GeForce2 GTS
Used this in my first system build, back when you'd be the envy of everyone to own it. OC'ed nicely, died a few months ago when I was playing around with an AMD stock heatsink mounted on it. Cost somewhere around $200.
ATi XPert 98
Got this from a flea market for $10, for secondary rig, which I could hook up to the TV every now and then. (Card has TV-Out). A surprisingly nice performer and was worth every penny.
GeForce4 Ti4200
Didn't have much cash, spent $90 on this, and it still wasn't worth that much. Forget about overclocking. It couldn't even run at stock speeds, and eventually committed suicide. Good riddance, I say.
Radeon 9800NP
Brought me out of the hell that was my Gf4. My keyboard got pretty wet the first day I tried it out.
nVidia Geforce 256 SDR
Half-dead, friend gave it to me as such. Killed it by running it for a while without a heatsink.
Radeon 7500
Pulled it from a friends old Dell. Sorta sucked anyways, slower than my Gf2. Ended up selling it.

S3 Trio 8MB
My first VC in my very first system back in 95. The box was a Cyrix 166mhz. lol with 16 mg of pc 33? if I recall ram.

3dfx VODOO 3 3000 (I loved this card back then)
In my second rig with a P3 450 which had just came out. Had 320 MB PC100 ram.

GF 4 TI 4200 128 8x
In my current system with an Athlon 2700, 1 gig Corsair PC3200 XMS dual channel, in a A7n8x deluxe.

I've been through a ton of them:

ISA Oak VGA 512k
Came with the computer; a 386SX20 with 4mb of ram. Video card did 640x480 with 256 colors, and could do 1024x768 interlaced with like 8 colors :p

VLB S3 864p 2mb
Ran on my first built-it-myself 486SX33 with 4mb of ram, and then later upgraded to 486DX3/120 and then overclocked to 486DX3/150. Video card could do more than my 15" POS Packard Bell monitor! In the really oldschool WinBench video scores, this card at 40mhz VLB outscored the Matrox Millenium II PCI cards!

PCI NVIDIA Riva 128 4mb
My first 3D card strapped to my next-gen computer; a P5/166MMX overclocked to 225 (75x3) and 64mb of EDO. I remember waiting for the newer and newer drivers to play GLQuake with :D Came with a few games that were pretty cool at the time too...

PCI 3DFX Voodoo 1 4mb
Well, the NV5 just didn't have enough 3D power for my needs... Overclocked this puppy and strapped it to the P5/225MMX box and it ran awesome! Loved playing Unreal on this setup!

AGP NVIDIA GeForce256 DDR ?32mb? (Maybe it was 16?)
Strapped to a P2/333 box with 64mb of ram; ran ok but wasn't anything really memorable. Wishing I had purchased a 3DFX Voodoo 3 or 5...

AGP NVIDIA GeForce 3 Ti200 64mb
Ran pretty stinkin good, strapped to a P3/550 box with 256mb of ram. Great rig, the performance on this was quite good. My first voltmodded card with a huge heatsink, worked really great until about 6 months ago when it finally died.

AGP NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti4200 64mb
Great card, used the hell out of it playing UT2K3 and GTA3... Was strapped to a P3/800EB for a while, then to my P4 1.8A @ 2.7ghz for a short stint. Started really using AA and AF on this card, typically 2xAA and 4xAF and I became addicted!

AGP ATI Radeon 9500np 128mb (Working softmod)
Best $150 I've ever spent on a video card, bar none. Ran about as fast as my 4200 until I started using 4xAA and 16xAF -- I think I drooled for like a week! :D Softmodded, huge cooler, voltmodded, ran 425/331 and pulled more than 6k in 3DMark03. One day I reaffixed my monster heatsink without using my insulating nylon washers on the steel screws I was using and shorted it out :(

AGP ATI Radeon 9800np 128mb
Replaced my 9500np when I killed it. This one came with 2.86ns Sammy memory, it overclocked relatively well at 417/385 or thereabouts. It only outperformed my 9500np at really high settings; otherwise I think my 9500 was almost faster in some scenarios. Still a good card though for only $200. This one cooked to death when my VGA Silencer fan plug somehow worked it's way loose while I was playing FarCry :(

AGP ATI Radeon 9800Pro (XT) 256mb
R360 core, R360 PCB, and even Hynix 2.5ns ram -- one bios flash later, I had an XT with all the features thereof. Really wasn't any faster than my 9800np; bought it for $200, sold it for $250 as an XT...

AGP ATI Radeon x800xt platinum edition 256mb
Not here yet, but it's on the way :)

TNT2 16mb. First card in our family's first computer. Ran mechwarrior 3 and carmageddon 2 just fine.

TNT2 32mb M64. Runs CS and DoD almost decently.

Geforce 3 ti 200. I put this in our family's 500mhz PIII to play hitman 2. It was alright at lower settings. Later it went into my 1700+ @ 2.3ghz machine, and got about 11K in 3dmark. Played BF1942 decently. Didn't OC for crap, but it was fun. Eventually it died.

Radeon 9500np, a decent step up from the geforce3, spent my whole last summer playing games on it.

XFX 5900XT. Good card, played games well. Got about 20K in 3dmark with my current rig.

Radeon 9800np, About the same as the 5900Xt. Played games great, but only Overclocked to 450/327 with an 80watt TEC and watercooling.

BFG 5900NU. Had this card for about a week, then I got a leak and killed it. Great card, but it's fried to hell and back.

9800pro, just got this card. Haven't tested it yet, I'm waiting on my ram to get here. Has hynix 2.5ns ram though, so it should OC well.

The progression of my main system's video card:

Voodoo 1
Guys, how many of you remember the first moment you popped your V1 in and saw the *incredible* difference it made? I went from 640x480 being unplayable, to being able to run 640x480, with filtered texures and everything *faster* than @ 320x240.

Voodoo 2 12MB
A decent upgrade from my V1, I could now do 800x600 ;)

Voodoo 3 2000
A great overclocker for me, went well past the 3500 with only a small bit of extra cooling. From this point on I ran 1024x768.

Geforce 256 SDR
The voltage issues concerning the GF256 and early K6-2 mobos forced me to upgrade my proc/mobo (which was actually a good thing).

Geforce 2 Pro 64mb
I wanted the Ultra, but couldn't afford it. I still have this card and it plays CS like a dream even though it won't overclock hardly any over stock.

Geforce 3 Ti200 64mb
I got lucky an got a decent-overclocking Ti200. Not quite Ti500 speeds, but well above the regular GF3

Radeon 9500np (failed softmod :()
I ordered mine the week the news had broke, before the softmod had even been released. It was a gamble, but at the time the payoff would have been huge. It didn't softmod, and I was always looked down on that card, even though it was still a decent upgrade from a GF3.

Radeon 9800np (flashed to Pro/XT :))
Well, when it came time for me to upgrade again, I really wanted to own my first-ever top of the line card. The BIOS-flash had only been discovered a few days earlier, and I picked up a Dell-pull 9800np off a FS/FT forum for only $220 shipped. This was a *hot* price at the time, considering that new 9800Pros went for at least $350 (oh how the times have changed ;)). To my sheer joy I found when I got it that it had Samsung chips. Months later I flashed it to an XT, as my max overclock happened to be the same as the stock XT's clocks.

Here is my progression

Unknown 1MB VGA Adapter
This was in the first machine that I obtained (Gateway P5-133). Went into my first built system for awhile, but got replaced quite quickly.

Sapphire ATi Radeon 8500LE 64MB
This was my first AGP card. This card was a moderate overclocker, and served me well in my first built system. Still serves as a backup card, and will probably end up in my file server eventually.

BBATi Radeon 9800NP 128MB
This was my next step up from the 8500LE. I got lucky and got one with the 2.8ns Samsung RAM. It was quite the improvement over the 8500LE. and it was an even better overclocker. Unfortunately, it ended up falling of my desk (long story) and as far as I know it doesnt work anymore (piece broke off, havent tried it since it fell off)

Sapphire ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
The replacement for the 9800NP. A much better overclocker than the 9800NP, and I havent even put the VGA Silencer or RAMSinks on yet. Should be powering my system for quite some time.
