View Full Version : Buy an Xbox with halo2 or more PC games?

currently im facing somewhat of a dilemma. im trying to decide whether or not i should invest about 200 dollars on an xbox with halo 2 (as well as accessories) when it comes out, or just some quality pc games coming out later this year. what do you think i should do? im a halo addict (play on xbox live at a friends house all the time) and halo 2 with an xbox looks pretty damn enticing, even with the huge price tag.

if you think keeping my money to purchase pc games seems like a better idea, then convince me! what good games are there that are coming out soon for pc that i should know about, aside from the obvious halflife 2 and doom3?

IMO Halo was always overrated. As for good games coming out there is battlefield2.

Halo, while a good game, was overrated.

Personally, I'd save my money, buy some games now, and wait 'till Halo II gets ported to PC.

Get the Xbox and Halo 2. Halo 2 is Live enabled, unlike Halo which just uses xboxconnect. Not only would Halo 2 on Live be awesome, but there are a ton of Live games that are a blast. Full Spectrum Warrior, Rallisport Challenge 2, EA Sports game starting this year are Live enabled, and a ton more. PC gaming is fun, especially for FPS and RTS, but it still isn't as fun as console gaming for sports games, racing, and now some FPS like Halo.

I have always been very partial to my XBOX. The XBOX has tons of great games right now, and I feel XBOX live is amazing.

Basically it all comes down to your current hardware. Eventually your going to need to upgrade your Geforce MX, so that will be costly. It also depends on what type of games you like, and what type of setting you like to play them around.
My two biggest arguments for XBOX are:
a. You only upgrade once every 4-6 years.
b. I can turn it on, join a game on Xbox Live, and invite my friends in under three minutes. How often can you do that on a PC?

If you want an XBOX only for Halo2, save your money and just go over to your friends house.

im actually running on a radeon 9800 pro, which may not be totally sufficient, but is a hell of a lot better than a geforce 4mx :D sorry bout that, i need to update my signature.

BAH! I'd go for the x-box + Halo2. Although, it will most likely cost you more than $200 to get everything you need. You'll need the console (retails for $150, but you can get it for cheaper used), Halo 2 (will reatail for $49 most likely), x-box live setup package ($60 when I bought it a year ago). I'm not sure if the x-box live setup package comes with a free year subscription or not... so it might be cheaper now if it doesn't include a live subscrition.

There are a lot of good pc games coming out soon, so it's a tough decision. I lean toward Halo2 b/c I will most likely devote a majority of my free time playing that when it comes out; regardless of how cool games like HL2 and D]|[ are.

In the mean time, click the link in my sig if you've got Halo PC. We're always up for teh Halo fraggin! :D

The XBOX live package I just got had the head set, 12 month subscription, and either mech assault or crimson skies. I think it was $69. Its a hell of a deal I think.

i have an xbox, but i find PC games have that differnt, more "mature" atmosphere. you can relate to people so much better. And PC online will beat xbox live for at least another 100 years!

Of course im going to get halo 2, but since you dont have a XBOX, i suggest waiting and then buying an xbox for halo 2 to see if it is worth it.

Xbox ownz... over-rated my butt. Maybe you haven't ever sat down with 15 other friends for a game or two. Then you would understand what's so great about it.

Okay now that that is out of the way. I don't think there is a planned bundle with Halo 2. If you are pressed for money find a refurbed box. You can grab Halo for about $20 and Halo 2 for $50. That could be under $200.

After that check out xbox scene and find you a mod chip and pick up a hdd. There are no limits to the fun you can have then. ;)

i would get the xbox, and of course get a xbox live subscription and halo and halo 2... halo is great on xbox when you have a few buddies to play against, while halo on the pc is great as well. :D

that reminds me i should try and renew mine since i just got dsl where i live now.. only thing is i didnt ever call and cancel it, hehe, wonder if they would renew it? well thats it for my off topicness.

Wow, great post

True that modding the Xbox does unleash some great power, but the Xbox is by no means sucky. It is obvious that you are just some ignorant fan boy who neither has an Xbox nor has ever played on Xbox Live. Although there are a fair share of morons on Live, playing console games online with games such as any XSN title (or the EA sports games for next year) is just awesome. Online PC gaming will always be great, but console gaming on Live is pretty damn close. Halo 2 on Live will be awesome come this winter :attn:

They said that about Halo, too. And last I checked, even if it was a craptacular port, it did make it.

I'm not a big fan of the Xbox. I don't hide this fact, but rather than start fights over which is better, why not just put the pettiness away for a moment, and just answer his question.

If I could do it all over again I don't think I'd have bought an xbox, there's just a lack of great games for the system. So if you buy a box just for halo 2 you may be dissapointed down the road. I will admit though Halo is still a great game even after being out 2 1/2 years.

Are you kidding?? I learned how to set up lans thanks to XBOX. A couple TVs, a couple XBOXs, a router, ethernet cables, friends and redbull = the greatest gaming experience ever. It's so much easier then having to set up your monitor and speakers and mouse and everything at 2 different places. If you have a seat you can play Halo comfortably unlike Comps where you need a table and a seat that is level with the table.
If you have never played 4vs4 BG CTF then your missing out. The memories are endless. In fact all this nostalgia (which is a bad term because i STILL play halo) is making me want to call some friends right now.
This is in no way a flaming, just an opinion i hold dear.
Now I understand why arguements get so heated in the CPU and Video sections.

LOL, you do know that all of those game you mentioned ARE or WILL BE available for X-Box and will be playable on X-Box Live, right?

Regardless of HL2 or D3, Halo 2 will pwn all titles on X-Box... I obviously can't speculate which will be the best, but I'll put money on Halo 2 being the choice title for X-Box gamers everywhere.

Halo 2 will very likely come out on PC, but you'll be holding your breath for a long time. Look how long it took MS to port Halo to PC... 1.5-2 years... Hope you guys have a pretty big lung capacity. :p

Yes, people do tend to abuse people verbally more on the PC. :D But XBOX live does have its fair share of annoying people too.

Whats the big deal? If you have an xbox, great for you, I have one and I love it. If you dont have one shut up and quit flaming, xbox has THE best line up for console games for 2004 and early 2005. And to the guy who said PC gamers get Half Life 2, doom 3 etc...lol those are going to xbox as well, and xbox gets co op in Doom 3...unlike the pc version ( *******s ) Anyways, I dont see a reason to flame xbox, its not like PS2 or GCN is doing any better this year.

Alucard, wanna get off my ass, please? I haven't installed the handrails yet.

Oh, and did you know that 78.84% of statistics are made up on the spot?

I'm (for once) not ragging on the Xbox, and you fail to see this. You're just ultimately assuming that I am, 'cause I'm posting in an Xbox thread. Yes, I did recommend that he not purchase an Xbox and Halo II, that I think is money could be better spent on PC games, rather than just on his Xbox and on Halo II when it's released (that's all he said he was buying it for. He didn't specify he was going to get much else for it).

I also voiced my opinion of the Halo port to PC, and how crappy I thought it was. Maybe it's better now w/ all the patches, but when I played it, up until about the 3rd or 4th patch, it sucked. It was a crappy port by Gearbox. I didn't say that the Xbox version sucked now, did I? Just the PC version, which might be better now (how many patches have been released?).

Also, in the same post you quoted me trying to calm down some of the members from starting some kind of fight. There are a few posts above that one that are starting to walk toward the flame line. You also seemed to completely miss Ian Cody's (http://www.ocforums.com/member.php?u=38839) post, and zero right in on mine. Why? I didn't downplay the Xbox like he did, and yet you try to bite my face right off, and leave him alone. Why, and to what purpose?

If you've got a problem w/ something I've posted in this thread, please either take it up w/ me in PMs, or speak to another member of the staff. There's no need to center me out just 'cause of a couple of posts I made over 6 months ago now. I've grown past it. People like their Xboxes. That's good for them. I don't like the Xbox, and that's ok, too. Isn't it?

cack01: Thanks for noticing

As for the rest: Please tone it down a bit, ok? We don't need a flame war or anything over which games are coming to which platforms.

Oni: Actually, in the 4th patch, they fixed many problems... and since then (May), they have released Halo CE, which attempts make fixes on many of the past issues w/ Halo PC by implementing fast shaders to improve on framerates and a rehashed netcode. Some ppl in the Halo community like it, some don't. Most Halo vets stick w/ Halo 1.04, since they've already learned to aim to compensate for lag, and don't want to have to relearn how to shoot.

Oni (http://www.bungie.net/Games/Oni/) is only one of the most innovative games I've ever played. It was a fantastic game, and one of the few games that actually held me right till the end.

The gameplay was varied (hand-to-hand combat with several v. cool special moves you learn over time, or weaponry (lots of interesting weapons, too, like the Mercury Bow :))), the engine, while certainly not as advanced as it could be, was excellently designed and built (from the ground up, no less), the graphics were very good, and the story was intriguing.

If you can, I'd suggest checking it out. It can be found in the $5.00 software bin at most stores like EBGames now. It's well worth it :)

Did i mention superior graphics and controls?

well, I will agree on the graphics; however, we all know graphics don't make the game, the story/implementation does. As for the controls, with the smaller controllers, XBOX actually comes closer to keyboard-mouse style than I have seen on a console; It is pretty good actually.

I do not know what to say about the "mature" level of the users. I personally think that as of currently, 90% of servers for any game that I have seen are run by immature-12-year-olds who love to pull the plug on you if you cap him or his buddies; I would think the same probably of the XBOX as well.

I play primarily PC games, but right now there's nothing out for PC, unless you want The Sims 2. I guess Tribes: Vengeance should be out shortly (hopefully), and there's always Dawn of War, but for racing games and RPGs, the Xbox has got a lot going for it. What was the last decent racing game on PC? Nobody better mention a NFS game cause they've all sucked since Hot Pursuit. And Rallisport Challenge for the PC sucked because the force feedback didn't work right on steering wheels. And now Fable is coming out, KOTOR2 is coming out soon (though it should be out for the PC sooner this time around), Jade Empire looks pretty good, and there's supposed to be a couple others. Sure, Fallout 3 is in development (I guess) and the new Elder Scrolls game just got announced, but that's years away. HL2 and Tribes Vengeance...who knows when they'll be out. After horrible dissapointments with Far Cry and Doom 3, this year has actually sucked for PC games. And there's nothing really to look forward to. I'm going to have to start playing my Xbox alot more pretty soon because there's nothing else.

Shawn123456
09-12-04, 04:40 PM
i agree with that ^^^

so do u think it would be smart to trade in a gamecube and get halo2 and xbox live and kinda leave the pc for some time

after two years of lackluster releases of PC games(non-ports that is, KOTOR does not count as a PC Game for the purpose of this statement), during which time the XBOX has seen an increase in great releases and an ever expanding audience do to the fact that for 400 dollars I can get an XBOX, some games, and a TV that is the same size as my monitor; I would be spending that much just for a good graphics card currently.... I think I know what I would get.

You already have a kick ass PC (original poster) so I'd go with the Xbox and Halo 2. You can always come up with $50 or less for the great games coming out on both. You may miss a game or two or have to wait till they are a little cheaper, but having the versitility of having both is well worth it.

I too like the Xbox PC combo.

As for Halo 2 coming out on PC I agree, don't hold your breath. MS loves to make money and will probably port it eventually, but they aren't going to miss out on all the Xbox sales by porting it any earlier then a year, so you'll be waiting for a while.

ps you need to get the Xbox to play Fable, Ninja Gaiden, KotOR II, Jade Empire and a couple more MUST have titles. I don't think Burnout 3 is out for PC either and that on is getting some seriously high scores from all the review site/mags. The way these reviews have been you would think its the greatest racing game ever (I'll have to buy it when I get a chance).

Xbox is probably my favorite console although I am a PC fan

I would stick with the PC, as was stated earlier we are nearying the console lifecycle, and perhaps xbox 2 will play xbox games

I personally think it would be a very dumb move for MS not to release Halo 2 for PC considering how well HALO pc did, HALO PC while not the most popular game out there did sell quite well and better than a lot of games

Consoles do have there merits, Consoles tend to have better racing games than PCs and PCs dont have any snowbording games.

Console RPGs are different as well, I personally think different in a bad way except for the zeldas which were very good.

Overall, just wait, Stick with the PC, play it on someone elses xbox first, than
buy one if you really want to, but I would ssuggest finding a few other games that you want as well because IMHO buying a console for one game is a waste.

I have been to many xbox lans before, there easy to setup, but I don't think there any easier than a PC lan party, + I think TVs are harder to transport than monitors and cases

I don't like the concept of having to pay for xbox live because you already have to pay for broadband, on PC if you have internet you can play online.

I think its hard to argue about maturity level for online play, I am a fan of PC play but I think you run into immature players on both, although from my experiance I find that i encounter them more on Xboxlive

IMHO stick with your PC

Xbox Next might be out mid to late 2005. It sounds like ATI is wrapping up their work on the gfx chip so they may get it out in that time frame..

EDIT: also, about Halo 2, its like Nintendo putting Mario out for PC or Sony putting GT3 or 4 out for PC (can't think of a great 1st party PS2 game that isn't GT otherwise I'd pick a non-sports title).

The one exception being MS and its obvious ties with PCs and thats the only reason they would take their biggest console franchise and make it available on another platform (that and they want every dime out of it). Anyway, point is Sony and Nintendo aren't going to do it (unless they release GT3 for PC sometime after GT4). MS isn't going to do it either, until they think they've gotten every last system sale out of it and then they will cash in on it with the PC version.

Hell, if I only had PC I'd be pissed and not buy it just for that reason or I'd buy an Xbox like tons of people are going to do. Its a great game and all (first one), but it ain't the best FPS for PC like it is for consoles and I wouldn't wait for it (sequal). I would, however, buy an Xbox for the games (not just Halo 2).

I guess I changed my own mind, if its just for one game, don't do it, but there are pleanty of reasons to get a box. Especially, the games I listed (A+++ titles that are exclusive or early release for Xbox with the exception of Burnout 3).

Halo 2 does look quality.

I hope it comes out eventually for PC.

Don't mind waiting as long as it's a good game, unlike Halo.

I hope they learn from there mistakes off the first game, I.E good performance, and get rid of the complete crappy level design in places.

i would wait on halo2 to come out for awhile and see if its REALLY worth all the hype, then make your decision.

I personally bought an Xbox just for Halo 2. I hated the job they did in porting Halo over to PC so, even though it won't look a pretty as a PC game (To any Xbox fanboys, even with a HDTV you still can't match a game running at 1600x1200) Plus, as I read somebody said earlier, there are other games that the Xbox has that the PC doesn't (PGR2, etc.)

If anything, you can buy the Xbox with Halo 2 then just sell it on Ebay when you get tired of Halo 2.

Uhhh ... a tad harsh. :(
xBox is cool if you do the mods though. Only way I'd own one. :p

A friend's son modded his xBox to take a 200gb desktop HDD and now uses
it to store all his music & movies etc ...
There is even a hacked version of WinXP for this if memory serves.

xBox is better for multi person gaming sessions, that's for sure. But
for me the PC is the best choice. Depends on personal preference I guess.
