View Full Version : Pre-Modded Optical Mice
I've been considering opening a buisness selling pre-modded optical mice (any color you want, and possibly any mouse), and am curious :
how many people out there would be willing to pay something in the range of 15 $ for a pre-modded mouse (15$ for the mouse, + 5$ parts and labor)?
Nothing spectacuar in they way of the basic mouse, logitech 2 Btn, more to be seen later.
Anyways, I am not selling anything, and if this is the wrong forum please move it (to the moderators).
just testing the waters, i don't want to make a big investment and then loose it.
thanks for the input
Also, i Could sell LED Modded wireess mice, Like the Logitech MX700.
Anyone interested?
Anyways, onto the Eye-Candy:

Nice clean soldering Job:

For these next Pics, I wired up2 more Blue LEDs into the housing to make it really light up. It looks cooler in person, as my camera has trouble with dim light. The mouse really glows. Also, I am considering the "firewheel" mod: AKA Replacing the rubber scroll wheel with plexi.

Extra leds really make it glow!

Look like the prices will be in this range:
20$ for normal 2 btn corded optical
71$ for MX700 (61$ for mouse, 10$ for work, and components)
Anything else (possibly) on request and special order.
Everything is color of your choice (Selection is -Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange, White, Ultra-bright White, and
Possibly BGR:

Probably won't work though.
Shipping, within america, will probably be about $4-$5 (for corded). need to check for MX, because of bigger box, and heavier. Dont count on these numbers though. And Buyer pays shipping.
for the time being I can probably use paypal's "Send Money" System.
Also above is a LED-Modded "Wireless Gyration Optical Mouse" i have had floating around for a while, (i didn't want to accidentally ruin my MX by modding it first).

This is the alternative modding section... You shouldn't try to sell that here, but rather tell us how to do it :p

I, as well, would love to know what you did to get a blue optical.

all that was done was an LED swap
un solder the old led, and solder in a new one - however the mice with more than one led in it probally tapped into the power main, or something
Well, I'm not really trying to sell anything, but rather asking if anyone would be interested.
Selling comes later (when i get the money together).

Funny, I thought mice read with Laser-optics, not LED's. Changing out Laser-optics is a little different then LED's, if I'm not mistaken.

OMG.. look at all the bright blue mice crawling around!...
I bet people would buy it... "Advertise" at local, small lanparties and I bet you could get a few noob geeks to buy em. I know I wouldn't. As of now, I only need one mouse, and I have one. And the bright blue LED on mine (not modded, logitech) is cool at first but obnoxious now.

i think its a cool idea, but i dunno if i would buy one. keep in mind...how the HELL would you advertise? once you get your name out there, you could start making some money, but that first step would be awfully tough. if you decide to do it, good luck!

I don't really think it's a good idea. It might look cool, but it might distract you from what you're doing if it's so bright, and hey, it's just two LED's added. :-/
You could try it out, and probably a lot of peopel will buy it because it looks cool, but personally I wouldn't.
Fascinating. I ask over in the Bit-Tech forums (AKA Europe), and a few people say perhaps, and 1 or 2 people say cool. Then i ask in this form (AKA America) and the ONLY response i get is negative.
Now THAT Says something about America.
I think a lot of people would be interested, if not the hardcore mdding community.
Be truthful. How many people who have posted can ACTUALLY Solder worth a damn?
i dont think id buy one... i think id ask you how you did that in a very subtle way :D then check out if i could do it myself, then sell them for just under your price so i get all the customers :D <--- nothing personal, just business! :D
btw: im dutch --> Europe ;) looks very nice though!

The thing is most of us actually know stuff... we just don't care. Some noob geek would probably think it's the greatest thing ever. Thats who you are gonna sell em' to.

I responded positively to your product, in fact, I believe an interest in knowing how the mouse was modded shows a better response then if I were to say I'd buy one. Just me maybe, but I think I'd like to keep people on their toes wondering how I was good at modding, then show off my talent to them with an astouding tutorial that will flatten their minds.
Sorry, temper and lack of sleep. :(
Anyways, the big issue would be advertisement. Any ideas?

your on the wrong forum, this is kinda the DIY forum, this belongs with the average joe sixpack who does not have a clue places like this exist and think that they will be one of the few with a mouse with a blue led, etc.

no offence, but you are mistaken
take apart your mouse, the optical sensor is guided by an led, thats what provides the light, You can stare at the bottom of a optical mouse all you want. A big misconception is that its a "laser mouse", it bugs me some people think that its so much more complicated than it really is.
and wolfe, i say good luck with your product - there is a market for it, maybe get in contact with a internet modstore to sell them, because you cant build a business off of them alone.. that would be the best way of advertising as well, and you could always do commissioned work from forumers that are interested

hey hate to burst your bubble on the idea of selling them but logic tech makes diffrent mice with diffrent colors i think you may hit a law problem with it to seeing that they offer diffrent mice in diffrent colors and i happen to be a very good at Soldering plus if you want something like that go to google and look up on how to change your led on your mouse gives full details on it lots of links
so yes i have a negative view on it hell its america i can :)

My bad, bro. I made the typical mistake. I'll see what I can do now that I know it's an LED, I'll probably switch out the red one in my blue mouse. It just looks retarded.

tried this mod once, very cool.
tried it again on my $40 ifeel mouse, except I used a 4 volt blue LED or something, and it wasnt bright enough default, so I wired it up to the 5v USB line and blew it, and upon unsoldering, it ripped the trace pads off and ruined it.
congratulations on the excellent soldering though, no balls on the leads :D

This is coming from someone that has modded to different colors, sold non-modded mice, and can solder quite well.
The mice WILL NOT track as well with a different color....the sensor is set to a certain wavelength. No matter how bright an LED I used, I was never comfortable enough to sell them to another person.
Good luck with it, but make sure it tracks as well or better than the stock.

heh ^_^ my ibm mouse glows blue on the mousewheel :D and when i got it i thought it was the kewlest thing but yeah, no one has the time or energy to do it themselves. i mean i am a modder at heart but come on now...how much time do you guys really have on your hands? thats why i got this ibm mouse, it came with the blue mousewheel stock. but no it doesnt track with blue, it has red on the bottom. good luck on trying to make some money on them but i just dont think there is an interest in mice alone....maybe if you did some work on keyboards and LED's on them that would be interesting. i would buy a mouse/kb combo then, especially if it matched and looked sick as hell. just trying to help ;)

If this project takes an hour, it's not that hard to do and easy to find time for. I wouldn't be pressed for time if I wanted to do this mod.
