View Full Version : Chico and the (Cache)Man
Okay, I have got Cacheman, now what do I do with it? I know nothing about this kind of stuff, and I want to tweak my P2 400MMX/256MB/ATI Rage Pro, to the max possible. What settings should I mess with, which ones should I avoid?
Grassy ass
like I was saying, now I started messing with the "settings", and my Physical memory" use has gone down, but Im starting to use "virtual memory" (which wasnt happening before), what is the difference between them? What is the best way to run my pc? Physical memory, or virtual memory?
Someone post before I start to screw things up over here.
I dont suggest messing around with the "sliders" in that program if your unsure. Grab the game or program that you use most often and are optimizing your system for and try the different presets 3DGamer,PowerUser,ECT. I haven't touched the program in a while so I cant give exact recomendations but try a few and find what works best for you. Set it reboot try your game at it's most intensive settings(within reason) and see if it's better or worse. Then stick with the best.
*Physical RAM is much faster than swapping BTW, swapfile use, AKA,cache,virtual memory is information being written to and read from your HDD so the less swapping the better.
(*)this excludes them newfangled supra ultra virtual drives(the ones that dont have platters AKA box O RAM with an ide style cable;))
I purchased some "Kingston" Value RAM a few weeks ago, and I noticed that "Crucial" RAM is cheaper. Is "Crucial" better than "Kingston"? The difference in price is only a few bucks, what does "non-parity" mean?

Ok this is in my system.ini under the [386Ehn] heading
MinPagingFileSize=524288
MaxPagingFileSize=524288
PageBuffers=32
MinTimeSlice=40
MaxBPs=65530
DMABufferSize=64
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1
Now I am useing 256megs of ram.
that should help you in cacheman
Vmem I am am running 512 megs min and max.
I hope that will help you out some.
I just finished "restoring" my system to original factory specs, and I have installed "earthlink 5.05", and "CacheMan 5", the prob is that the memory used at startup is 80, and seems like the longer I leave my PC on it keeps going up, even if im not doing anything.
I know it is supposed to go up, but it has been going to 254 (I only have 256!!!) Wouldn't do that with AOL, do y'all think that EARTHLINK is using up all of my memory???
*as for the Kingston -vs- Crucial, any opinions?

if cacheman doesn't work for ya or if it just confuses you too much, then use something a bit simpler. the program i recommend most is called maxmem and it's available from www.analogx.com and it's freeware. this prog doesn't ask for any fancy numbers...all u do is configure it (VERY simple) and then click on the icon in the systray when you want some memory freed. It's not quite as good as cacheman IMO, but it's much easier to understand.

since i'm so nice, here's a direct link to maxmem so u don't have to go thru their whole page
