ok. this might be my first case mod, but i usually dont start off easy in anything and always jump for hard. my sister has an semi-old 1992 or 1993 Chevy Lumina Van. the trunk pistons for lifting the trunk are pretty much dead for the weight of the trunk door, but i was thinking when she gets those replaced it might be good for a side panel. hell it would be original where i live cause most people done here in florida are old and just buy dell  . so i was thinking maybe i could hook up the pistons to the base of my case and to the panel maybe put some hinges on top that way i get a sort of lamborgini gull wing feeling going on.
i have a basic idea of how to mount them but the locking mechanism might be my dead point. and ideas or opinions would be greatly honored. and the case might be a Antec PlusView 1000AMG, though i havnt fully decided.

These Forums ROCK! :attn:

*edit* on second thought, once i get enough money i might go with the AOpen h700B. looks like a overclocking friendly computer especially with 6 fans ^_^

that would be cool, but are you sure you'll be able to fit it?

yeah fittin it should be no problem i think. the case is a full tower and there isnt even enough gas for the piston to fully lift.

That is a good idea. I have some off of an '84 Volvo 240 and the still take all of my strength to compress them fully, definitely not what you would want for your project.

as in theyld still be to strong? then could there be a way to decompress them?
i dont think theyld be that strong. see my father is handicap so everytime we go out the trunk is opened and closed atleast 5 times to put the wheelchair in and out. i can close the thing with a finger and it doesnt lift the trunk at all. it keeps it from falling down slightly, but u have to lift it up. bt w/e ill have to work on it. i might try to design it with legos my friend has the pnuematics set from long ago ^^. play with legos, measure thrice, then cut. ^^

you still have to factor in how heavy that trunk is compared to a case side.
what can barely lift a trunk may bend the case at the connecting points.

with strong enough hinges, it should work. the only problem I foresee is what angle to mount it at. someone who's good with this stuff might tell you that there's a certain angle that will be best

i would suspect leverage is all you need to concider... i would mount the struts to the bottom of the case door, and then see what works best for the other side of them... i think that ones made for a car will be too strong for what you are doing, but the idea is cool and i know you can pick some up cheap. i had some for the hood of my camaro and i replaced them for $15 a piece, and those are darned heavy duty.

anyone know where i could get some that would be more appropriate for a computer. (small, not as powerful) what kind of store carries this stuff?

Is this what you are thinking of??
(dont mind the position of the pistons...)

Here is a nice locking mech

http://www.geocities.com/gamergo183/lock1.bmp

it works like a lever. you press the lever and it lifts the lock. another thing is that glove compartments have those... hehehe... i know my Jimmy does and my parent's van...

just get out of the way when you open... lol...
you should get a piston that opens slowly and just enough so that you don't whack yourself when it opens.

also when it goes slow, it makes a nice hissing sound... sexy..
pssssssssssss.... LOL!
