im running an amd thunderbird with a 1.4 gig. Its an abit kt7a motherboard with 512 pc133 ram and a geforce 2 mx400 64 mb, soundblaster live value. ethernet,
cpu runs at 52 celsius with a cool master fan and the case open when running programs such as counter strike. Is this an acceptable temp or do i need a better fan.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

My idle temps are about 53 and full load temp are on 57 (1.2GHz Athlon not o/ced). And I'm running rock solid, though I don't like those temps, I think their due to high ambient. I would suggest u should try and lower the temps u got for better stability.

Whether or not you change your CPU cooler depends. Cooler Master HSF aren't necessarily the Cadilac of coolers, you may want to look at something by Global Win or some of the more exotic copper jobs like the SK6 or the Glaciator. That will probably help your temps although you certainly aren't out of line temperature wise, those 1.4's run pretty hot as it is.

Like the others said, you might want to look at your case fan scenario as well, make sure you get some fresh air in and push it out, it can make a huge difference.

Delta 38 mounted on any sink makes a nice difference too. Kinda loud, but they're only like $6.

52ºC Load Temp is quite acceptable for such a high rated AMD CPU. Getting temps lower will definately increase the lifespan of your cpu. If you dont think you will be upgrading your cpu within a year then keep your default fan and enjoy the peace and quite. On the other hand, if you want your cpu to last a bit longer then a Delta would be a noisy fix but a very good one.

I have a ThermoSonic Hollow Core and I used to run with the stock fan. I have my comp nearly 24/7 at load and so the lower the temp the better. This has driven me to go to a 60mm Delta 38cfm then upto a 80mm Delta 68cfm Screamer. Its so noisy that any normal person would think that the sound was coming from a hair dryer. But the performance EASILY makes up for the sound. At the moment I run around 39-40ºC Load but winter should bring those temps down by 5-7ºC.

Loud fans are only acceptable in my opinion if you can have your computer music/game sound loud. There is an interesting article on sound reduction on www.overclockers.com which shows how to counter the high pitched whines of Delta fans. The mods normally comprimise cooling however.
