I'm away from the computer scene for a while, I don't know if intel has catch up to AMD budget/performance. So I need opinion whether I should go with AMD or Intel?, and what's the best mobo/cpu combo I could get for $400-450 canadian.

Go with a mobo that uses the AMD761 chipset, and an AMD 1.4ghz CPU. Will kick the crap out of any Intel PIII, and if you overclock, will equal or out perform most Intel P4's. Ave price for the mobo, chip (look at pricewatch.com for best pricing), and good cooling fan will be about $300 USD.

I ordered a ECS board/1.2 athlon cpu combo found thru Pricewatch today. $154. Don't think the board will overclock, but should be decent for my workstation if it isnt DOA :) . Got 256MB ram from Crucial for $41, enlight 300watt tower for $66. 20gb Fuji drive for $81, geforce2 64mb $71. All prices included the shipping. I'm shooting a craps with the mail order, but we'll see what happens.
