well my computers are in my living room and my room (both are carpeted) and i need to be by the computer so i can read guides as im putting it together

i have this sheet of lynoleum (i breakdance on that) so could i put that on the floor and stand on that to prevent static?

also im gonna be placing everything on my pool table (which is covered by some blanket type thing) so could i put a bunch of place mats or something on top so theres no static?

i built my last two on my table, but I have a plastic cover over that. I would just take your mat and place it on your pool table, that should be fine.

Just keep yourself grounded and it wont matter where you build them.

I drag my plastic-footed PC across a nylon carpet wearing socks
static != problem as long as you touch the case before fingering the chips ;)

ok so umm i could just place all my components and stuff in a big box of cotton as long as i ground my self?

i think ill just drag this big huge concrete type table thing down int he basement and put it ont he pool table

Just put it on a table, and ground yourself! I have a pool table and was thinking about building on it too, tell me how it goes if you do!

Heh, lol, I build wherever I find it comfortable. Building on the floor is the best, IMO. I never really cared about static electricity. On a table would be fine, I guess.

You guys don't seem to have much appritiation for electrostatic damage. wood is the ideal surface for working with electronics. carpet is a bad surface for working with electronics and should be avoided at all cost.

(manager of electrostatic damage at delphi interior:))

im gonna lay card board and wood on the pool table (and lynoleum on the floor) or ill put the table on there

I usually build computers in my room, tile floor, or the basement, industrial carpeting, I use static bags to lay things out, that usually works pretty well.

to each his own I guess

if you have a little sister or a dog they work very good for grounding, just keep poking them every now and then, i recommed the stomach, or the temples, so you get rid of static that way.

lol...ok, ill keep that in mind, haha i have 2 dogs so i can get grounded X 2 haha

Every computer I've built I've done it on my bed in my room. Never have had a problem with static electricity and never really bothered to touch my case first or anything like that. Though, I'm sure it'll happen to me one day... :-/

just because you dont notice the damage doesnt mean it isnt happening.

My basement is carpeted, but it's the short carpeting...hard to get static from...anyway I set up our big round table, the wood fold up, and put everything on there...also wear SHOES...thats a great idea...I just hate how my cat was around all the time and wanted to play with every little piece, so I store away the stuff and put the side of the case back on when im gone.

I've worked on tons of computers on carpet, OLD computers, we're talking PII, and no damage. I'd say as long as you upgrade your hardware at least once a decade you'll be all right.

I didnt know people were still breakdancing! Am I out of touch?

Just don't wear socks. I build my computers on my carpet/bed too. Just don't set the parts on anything that could get shocked.

I dont think you understood me. I work at delphi interior. we build cockpits for the mercedes M-class. We have had millions of dollars worth of ESD damage and i am the on site expert working to fix the problem. carpet will damage your hardware end of debate. you may not notice the damage 1 time or even the second but it WILL happen.

the best surface to work on is wood because it isnt overy resistive or overly conductive. Too conductive and a charge from one part of the board will go to another part of the board and cause damage. too resistive and you get buildup of charge. Wood is a good medium.

Working conditions at our plant (we still get killed equipment) employees standing on thick rubber mats, wearing ESD straps, parts on wood surface. I don't know why you guys underestimate the damage and downplay the experience of somone who has to deal with the damage on an everyday basis.

Just don't wear socks. I build my computers on my carpet/bed too. Just don't set the parts on anything that could get shocked.
-that is the absolute WORST place to work with parts. carpet will keep a charge for a very long time and discharge it on your parts. you not only endanger your own parts but encourage others to take such risky behavior :(

ive always either setup my pc on my persian rug or my desk... ive never had a prob with static... i make sure nonetheless to touch the case first before touching any computer components.

wow, i've built 2 computers on my carpet probably with my socks on, with a bunch of other people walking around with their socks on and never had a problem, better change that habit before i end up ruining new parts.

woohoo this topic is over!!! (at least for me) got my parts today and i finished building today. Took me from 12 noon to around 10 at night haha

but its cool, right now im getting around 25 degrees celcius for the system and 35 degrees at idle and internet usage

its really nice, cant wait to play some games tomorow!!!

im gonna install a 120mm fan whenever i get my new hard drive

havent checked the temps at load
