quick question.

OC under win2k or win98SE

i have an impression that win2k will be more stable than 98 but will use more cpu load...but i'm not sure.

plz post your opinions to help me out :)

Ok let me see if I can help.
Win98se is more stable, you won't be targeted by worms that use flaws such a code red, it uses less CPU load (Which is good if you are on the folding or seti team) and last of all cost less then 2k

Now the only think that I might say about 2k is that if you do get it get 2000 server pro for gods sake. Its much better than plain old 2k.

If your not a member of the folding team od seti I would advise you to check them out. Every clock cycle wasted is a clock cycle that could have been used to help science.
I hope I have been a help to you

dude, win 2k is much more stable than 98, 2k is much better becuase if a speed is unstable it wont boot, and itll give you an error, but at the same speed in 98 itll boot into windoews, but then itll screw up, or worse yet restore to a previous registry(thois happened to me), 2k is much more definitive, for example in 98 you will have 6 bsods per 1 in win2k however, in 98 they are recoverable (about 10% of the time), and in win2k youll have to reboot, also the temps in win2k are much lower (is this because of mbm or win98), i can touch my heatsink, and itll be about 60F, and win98 reports 110 at idle, in 2k itll say 32C at idle(sounds right to me), and 49-50 load....

Both are good for overclocking.
If you play alot of games and have 256mb of memory or less then I would pick win 98.
Flip a coin if you cant decide or make a dual boot and use both.

Sorry lets see if I can clear this matter up I need to rewrite this part.

Win98se is more stable in the fact you won't be targeted by worms that use flaws in the IIS such as the code red worm used, it uses less CPU load (Which is good if you are on the folding or seti team) and last of all cost less then 2k

and YES windows 98se does use less load than windows 2k ask folding team members. 2k has a more involved kernel which eats away a clock cycles because of all the advanced CPU codeing used in 2k and also XP which makes 2k's clock hogging look like its windows 95.

Win98se was not stable enough for me. Even at the time about 1.5 years ago when I had 128Megs of ram. When I was working on the machine for hours and hours something would not react anymore and eventually freeze the whole system, and you had to close everything down and reboot. Now with Win2k this never happens, it's much much better at multitasking. The problem with win2k is that it installs and runs just like that so people think they're there, while you really have to do a lot of tuning and tweaking to get her as should be. Like some system administrator once told me; "win2k is just another NT version, and it takes two days to get a proper NT system set up from scratch..." I installed her as standard-PC (not ACPI wich is a drama!), since I only have a cable modem I removed Microsoft Family networks and file and printersharing. I have no IIS setup, and you're talking about worm-virusses? Use a good 'borrowed' corporate edition antivir. Then we have the NTFS file system which might be a little slower than FAT32 indeed, but it's much more resistent against defragmenting and data-corruption. Also the hybernate function is a feature I wouldn't wanna do without anymore.

Just making a statement about how many of the new viri and worms are targeted at 2k and also NT nothing more than that.
I have very few problems out of my Windows 98 box but that cause I format about every 2 to 3 months

every 2-3 months, woah, i had my 98se running for about a year straight, and the whole code red thing is easily fixed (windows has a patch, in fact my dad has a small business server, and microsoft acually called him up and told him to get the patch...not bad

Personally, I would prefer neither, I am sick of windows and am running very happily under RedHat Linux 7.1
