Crap! My Dremel just died. I was sitting outside my house working on my next project. Then all of a sudden: RRRRRRRrrrrrr......... First I thought that it was the fuse to the power outlet,but... It was the dremel.:bang head Isn't this suppose to be kind of high quality or something like that?
At least I was able to find the "proof of purchase". Back to the store on Monday and complain. They better give me a new one...

*cries* this is a sad day *takes out his black clothing* when is the funeral?? It is supposed to be high quality, but make a good point, act dumb or something. Hope they replace it.

Not to sound off beat, but how long have you used it for. And did you try to blow out the brushes or inspect them (brushes are found under 2 slot head screws on either side of motor ~ make sure its unpluged first ;)). You could have cracked one they are made out of carbon and if you have dropped it they can crack / shatter

Oh I had that happen to me also but with a RTX not a Dramel. My dad put a power outlet out by our pool equipment so he could run some malibu lights....And he needed to cut a hole on the fence for running a wire or something so he used my RTX which was the 1st thing he tried in the new outlet. Plugged it in an BAM it started sparking and smoking cause my dad somehow hooked up the outlet wrong  In the end I got a new RTX any many accessories for the screwup.
End of Story....thanks Dad

It just suddenly stopped spinning while I was useing it. Like someone turned off the power.
I got it for christmas(2003) and haven't used it to much. Only one case. Maybe 15-20 hours effective. It have never been dropped in the floor and I take real good care of my things. I probably can afford a new one, but then I will be delayed with some parts on my current project until next payday, and I hate delays!

If you can check out the Black and Decker RTX. Its like a Dremel but alittle better built IMO plus it has a rubber grip on it and is shaped to fit your hand better.

Wow, looks almost like a Dremel. I bet It works great too, but the Dremel is already paid for... I hate too loose money. Ok, it was a gift, but you get the point. Thanx for the advise anyway.

Aww, sorry to hear that :( Well, now you can get an even better one! Like a Super-Dremel 204040000!!1

..ok, so there is no such thing.. BUT IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES!!! :D

I bet it is just the brushes in it. Pull them out and if there not broken then sand them a bit and put them back in. You can get just the brushes for it if they are broke.

BTW the craftsman rotary tool is the same thing as the dremel, so you may be able to get brushes from sears for it.

Yeah! I was thinking of that new nuclear driven 1.000.000 rpm version wiith one admantium(sp?) disk bundled. You know, that metal that only Superman is strong enough to shape. He's actually the foreman on the Dremel factory in Mexico. His other job doesn't pay to well...:D

Would that void the warranty?

If the store won't take it back I'm sure they'll be some sort of manufactures warranty to go with it. I bought a cheapie dremal from wal-mart. (I should have bought a real dremal) and after a year of abuse it finally quit. So with nothing to loss I opened the case. It's a rather simple device, and was fairly easy to fix. (ended up being the axle connection between the motor and the bit) So if all else fails, break it open and see what went wrong yourself.

I dont think it would void the warranty and as far as you living in Norway goes, umm move to the states :D If you can get it warranted then do that first. I would at least reseat the brushes and it if that helps.

If it is not the brushes, then I know what is wrong.

I've had a simillar problem happen to my Dremel... I tend to use it a lot and run it for long hours. I'm pretty intense with my Dremel. I love it though. It is so awesome!!!
WOOT! The Dremel is an L337 tool!

Anyways, the only problems (happened twice) that I've ever had with my Dremel was that the wires in the the coil armament get cut. Let me explain. If you open your Dremel (if you are not good at reverse engineering, plan ahead and keep organized), you will see the coil. Take it out and inspect the rear of it. There will be a part where the wires clip to an aluminum (I think) clip. It pinches the wires and makes contact with the armament. This is where I think Dremel ( and others) made a mistake. The metal clip actually cut into the wires and make them weak. High RPMS and lots of heat make it vulnerable to getting disconnected. The first time it happened to me, I just took some thin wire and did some careful soldering. The key is to try and make sure you don't solder too much, or you will throw it out of balance and it will make a lot of noise. This can also wear out your Dremel a lot faster.

The second time it happened to me it was on the other side, which was nice cuz it evened things out again and it actually ran nicer.. lol!

Anyways, I was too lazy to go for my warranty. I hate downtime and like to go go go!
I would rather take the time to crack it open and repair it and get back to work than to send it in for repairs and wait...

I hope they replace it for you though!!!! Where did you buy it? I bought mine from HD! They rock! I've never had a problem with HD!

Anyways, you can always order spare armaments! and you will never have downtime!
lol!!!! they cost about $45 i think.. i'm not sure...

GOOD LUck!!!

It's itching(sp?) in my fingers to open it up. I newbienerd is close to the answer. If it's not that I think that the motor i just burned. Well, Tomorrow is monday and the store is open. I'll have to just wait and see. There is no way I'm waiting for a repair... If they make trouble, then I will make it a crusade to turn their already bad rep. worse..:D

Was at the store today. A guy did some stuff with the brushes and the Dremel came to life... Well that's nice...I thought.
Came home and continued working on some stuff. All of a sudden this strange noise and some rythmic vibrations came and the rpm dropped. Now the noise is constant there and the dremel gets insanly hot even at low rpm with no load. Crap! :bang head Back to the store again tomorrow. I hate it when stuff like that happen!

did you read the instructions on new brishes by any chance?

you have to let it run, full RPM, no load, for 10-15 mins iwht new brushes...to let them wear in. or they become off balance, and ^^^ happens... just to let you know :)

DaWiper
06-14-04, 02:18 PM
I didn't get new brushes. He just took one out and reseated it. Tried to fire up the dremel again now when it was cooled down. The noise was a bit better. but the lowest setting is faster than it should be and it gets almost to hot to hold after about a minute. Any ideas?

Hmmm... Did some more "manual-reading". I might seem like the brushes are worn(sp?) out. The sparks inside the dremel are extreme... Are new brushes expensive?

newbienerd
06-14-04, 09:33 PM
no! and they are cheaper than getting a new dremel... so get those brushes replaced right now! before you ruin your dremel permanently!!! NOW!!!!

GOGOGOGO!!! what are you waiting for??? It's better to replace your old brushes anyways than to take the risk... why are you still reading this???

Go and get new brushes!!!

dude go with the black and decker rtx has a longer warrenty and to me more dependable than a dremal plus all the stuff that fits on the dremal fit on it so it is nice for if B&D dont have what you want and dremal does then hey get the dremal stuff

Just got a store to order new brushes for me. With some luck I should have them by friday.

Why should I buy a new tool when I still go 1.5 years warranty left? If new brushes don't work they have to give me a new one.

DaWiper

To make a long story short. Changed the brushes. Didn't help. Overheated in 20-25 seconds. Smoke came out, etc.

Complained at the store. They sent it to repair.
And today they finally gave me a NEW DREMEL including a 15 bits "bundle" YEAH! :D (Wonder how long this will last....)

2 months later? geez, i would raise hell if that happend to me.

DaWiper

Heres the whole "timeline".
-They used about 3-4 weeks to get me new brushes....
-Then they forgot to send it to repair. Called them after two weeks and reminded them....
-Then they told me that they would send it that same day.

About two weeks later I got a new one(the repair place is two and a half hour drive from here). Called the shop today and they said it came yesterday...
Thank God I'm a patient man or there would be some crazy headlines in the local newspapers....

Heh, kinda off topic, but relating to local headlines:

A local guy was arrested for chucking his cell phone through a Verizon store, then charging in and tearing the place apart. Shortly after he through his phone through the enterence all the employees bolted through the back door and called the police!

The guy said he was just going to yell (even though he put on eye protection to avoid mace and has been picked up 3 times since then for brawling at local bars).

verison will do that to a person, just try their DSL :)

my dremel gets hot after a while, but then i just let it cool down. sounds like yours was defective...i need new brishes, how much were yours?

I havent had any need to take apart my dremel (craftsman), but I have worked with electric motors before for R/C cars. With that experiance in mind, I would try to clean the part the brushes touch and spins (comm). Even if you don't change your brushes, u could clean it now and then... Let the brushes last longer.

My dremel got almost too hot to hold after half minutes use. Almost forgot, the speed switch didn't work correctly.1 was more like 3-5 and full speed was like..uhhm... not full speed. The vibrations and noise(you could hear the sparks real well) was extreme. I had to pay about 100 NOK for a set of brushes which equals to 14.59 $...
