So I got a g5 on the 28 of last month and had to take it back two times to get an exchange on it casue of hardware problems. Two defective machine brand new out the box. The first one had problems with dual monitors one 23 inch apple hd display and a 17 inch samsung. when the computer goes to screensaver fir about five mins it will give distortions across the screen untill the screen goes black  . wtf it cant wake back up properly so took it back to apple store and they test it for like five hrs trying to figure if its my monitor or g5. they finaly say its a graphic problem with the 9600 pro so they exchange me with a new g5  . Took it home plug it in and it sounded like a rocket, all 9 fans on high speed you know how loud that is :attn: , Airplane turbine sound so 11 days later today june 12 I took my g5 back to apple to find out why my g5 sound like an airplane engine. So I look at there guinesus bar and there was an dual like mines making the same noise hummm. They already did a check that computer out and guess what it had a burnt out proc. I said thats a shame laughing. So they ran the same check the the one they had in and 3.5 hrs later guess what me tooo the same s### burnt out proc :argue: . wow I returned over 7000 $ two machines that are defective in less than a month its is my third g5 what are the probility of two defective g5 for 1 person? and I hope I never have to go back except for software for my a/v system protools and shake 3.5. I want to throw a pair of 74gb raptors in raid to see some perfomace. Im scared cause of my horrors of losing everything casue apple have not got those bug out of the g5 no wonder why they are releasing new 2.5 g5s in aug.
I know a few people with G5 PowerMacs who have not had any problems whatsoever. It is my thinking that you are just a really, really unlucky person. Third times a charm, though, eh? :D Nice computer, by the way.

Apple released a hardware update for the G5's, to fix a problem with runaway fans that would ramp up and up and up.
I had the same problem with a dual G5 system that was brand new. I downloaded and installed all the updates, restarted, and I've never had the problem again.
All in all, I've been really impressed with the dual G5's, except they use a really loud hard drive (very loud seeks.) I think it is a Maxtor. It is a very annoying noisemaker in an otherwise very quiet machine. They should have used Samsung SATA drives. They are so quiet, they're almost inaudible.

I love the G5's as well. Very sleek design. Apple is doing a pretty good job thesedays with their designs, and they aren't too terribly slow anymore. Finally they're worth a second look for powerusers.

I've been using a dual 2 GHz G5 at home and another at the office, for the last month. I've been forcing myself to use them and get more accustomed to working with them.
Apple finally makes a really fast machine, I must admit (although they cost over 3K each.)
If it weren't for the fact that I can't find as much freeware and games, I might even be persuaded to switch (assuming I didn't have to pay for the system.) The ones I use now, belong to my employer. They were just sitting in their boxes, being stored until the new Lab is ready, so I asked the Graphic Department Chair if I could have a few to use for the next few months and get used to working on them, since I provide tech support for her department.

well, this is a little off topic, but i went through 7 stock ECS mboards in 1 month.
when i pluged em in, it would just sit there and not post, when the guy gave me a Gigabyte, it worked fine.
before that i went through 3 compaq computers in 4 months
i had bad luck with computers.

three times is a charm camH.cmc I know that g5 has fan updates but my proc was burnt out so fan update wasnt the problem somebody had the same problem as me, the 9800pro for mac is known to have issuse with dual monitor at high res. so I did not get it and its not bad luck for me cause apple policy is top notch service I have been a mac user scince the 6800 and still have that .my g3 b&w is slow so I did not use it that much. my g3 laptop is faster but 128 mb is not going to cut it .I can return and get a new sysytem if there is a hardware problem thats nice to me money is safe there. The g5 are extremly quiet the only thing I hear is my fish tank thats how loud this machine. The reason for this machine is for ps 7,ps cs, golive 6,dreamwever 04 w/ flash, after effects 6, ills, indesign, quark express, pro tools, acrorot 6 extinsis and more havent finished installing but it can run all those program with only 512 memory and no slow downs Ill add 4x 512 later when I think its time too much for a computer. I spent at least 5000 on software and still need more and thats why I have a new dual 2600 thats has never been plug in

They aren't.
Apple couldn't make them that fast, so they put out the dual 2.5, instead. It needs watercooling, just to handle the heat, so don't expect a dual 5 GHz G5, like Apple initially promised. It ain't gonna happen.
